Default Locked Up Timing Chain

I had my engine rebuilt due to a failed lifter eating my cam. During the disassembly, the shop found the timing chain was locked up. They said they'd never seen one lock up before and said it was on the verge of failing. It was a double roller but I'm not sure on the brand. Is the chain locking up a normal preface of a failure or could it be contributed to something else?

I upgraded the chain but my concern is did the chain almost fail because it was faulty, because of the lifter/cam failure, or was it something else which may happen again? It was a H/C LS2 with an UDP, which I know gets referenced alot in timing chain failures. There was about 30k miles on this build so I would think I the chain was faulty it would have broke sooner. I'm wondering if the cam being eaten by the lifter affected the chain.

I'd appreciate any theories or info on timing chain failures.

It most likely had to do with the valvetrain problem you were having. If the crank is trying to turn the cam via the timing set, but you have a jacked up lifter adding tremendous resistance, it probably deformed and idamaged the chain.

Are you using the factory harmonic damper? It can be valve train related or it can be undampened crank harmonics...buy a good damper if you don't already have one.

I'm checking all my paperwork and I don't see anything about a damper. I'll have to check with the shop. The chain has about 20k miles on it and it just seems like too much of a coincidence the chain locked up after I have valvetrain problems.

Paperwork shows an ASP UDP was part of the original build about 40k miles ago. I've had no problems with it in that time but it looks like I was on the verge of one. I guess an ATI is on order.

ATI Damper, Cloyes Hex a just gears with a Extreme Duty C5R chain or Hinson C7R chain, LS2 Damper, if not drilled, fit a Trick Flow damper bracket.

Probably overheated the rollers on the chain causing galling and lockup inside the chain pins.
