Default New LS2 Block

I'm considering buying a new LS2 block for my build. I know they say these blocks are finished bores. Has anyone actually purchased one and checked? Are they ready to run, or have some seen they need a .005 hone to make them correct?
I had thought of starting with a new LS3 block, but from some research the liners are not centered, causing issues if a bore is needed later.

I was asking myself the same question about the 5.3 engine block. Haven't figured it out yet, so can't give you an answer. I am curious about the aswers you'll get..

They are not ready to run, although GM claims they are. A good machine shop will need to check it over and fit your pistons.

I talked to one machine shop who said they put torque plates on them and did a final hone. Yes you should check everything on any block, no matter who you pick it up from. No they were not ready to just slap a rotating assembly in but it seemed very little machine worked was usually required. I would like to hear more from the more experienced in here and have been watching this since you first posted it.

I figured the block would need to be final honed, but wondered if an over size piston would be required. I'd like to hear from more engine builders/machinists. KCS?

I have yet to see a ready to run block straight out of the crate. At a minimum, a final hone is usually needed. For just a quick stockish type rebuild, you can bump the hone through without a torque plate and use a stock size piston. If you use a torque plate, they usually need more material removed which requires an oversized piston.

More machining could be needed depending on how you want it set up. The deck may need to be surfaced to get the piston in or out of the hole however far you want. The mains may need to be honed if you want to add ARP studs. The bottom of the cylinder may need to be clearanced for stroke, etc.

Thanks KCS. So now I know for a performance build, an oversized piston will be needed.

yep, have it checked out and taken out to a 4.005" bore or other bore size. We do this to all our new LS blocks.

This thread right here can save me quite a lot of money! Overbore pistons it will be when ordering parts for a new block from the other sight of the pond.
