I also run 15.7 AFR under light throttle cruising. I do this for fuel savings and also for a slight de-torque. Again, with closed loop it will always trim back to stoich.
Ah I think I see where you're going now. There's some tables in Efi Live to resolve those issue but it sounds like the Alpha N stuff is working for you. I'd be interested in seeing a write up on alpha N using the stock ecu.

So any preliminary guesses as to what went wrong now that you’ve had some time to think?

As I was reading through it sounded like a broken pushrod but you said it was still there and still straight.

The engine cranks and just doesn’t move the #6 exhaust lifter up and down?

Only thing that makes sense is broken cam, but that would take out cylinders 7 and 8 too?

I do, but it is too easy to twist facts to fit theory instead of twisting theories to find facts. Right now I am pretty sure either the lifter roller or cam lobe is gone. Beyond that I will try to recreate the order of events based on what I see when I am in there.

If it turns out it was my fault I will own it. If it turns out there was a part failure I am very confident in the vendors chosen that I will not be hung out to dry.

I understand the temptation but please do not speculate. Better to just see what we find first.

Whelp, whole motor coming out. On disassembly I found where something hit the back side of the runner and punched a hole in it. Probably that pushrod when it threw. Right near the rocker bolt boss. Metal on the dipstick. So at a minimum it is a disassembly, clean, and reassembly.

Really not how I saw this one going but it is what it is at this point.

There are some things I have sort of accepted that now I will go in and make right. Will keep the thread updated. Traveling until Thursday, so I will not know more until then.

Sorry to hear that man, that just plain sucks. Sometimes it's good to step away for a bit so travel isn't the worst thing to happen.

Not to belabor this painful deal, but someone clarify what Darth said was the cause. Sounds strange, maybe I'm not visualizing it right.

Yeah I thought the same thing actually. Not too upset to be leaving town. Been doing some calling around. Members and vendors on here are great.

I still am not sure the cause. And I am holding off speculating. Too easy to cause more issues by guessing. What I do know for sure is number six exhaust lobe or lifter - one of them is toast if not both. But something hit the runner too from the outside. I think it was the pushrod on six intake when it bent.

Man, I still cant fathom how that happend. Crackd runner. Maybe a flawd casting? What kinda force must that take for a clean break like that?

That is why it is best not to speculate. I doubt casting defect. It took a hit.

Well that's what I couldn't get! HOW does something just flat bust thru an intake runner?? I saw the pic, so yeah it is real. I hope you can fix this Darth, without too much hassle.

I think so. It can be welded and then retouched. It took a hella hit. That is what I still have not seen. What is underneath. But all of that is minor.

Figure I am going to need to pull the whole motor. If lucky (not planning much on luck though) I will just need to clean the bottom end, resleeve the lifter bore, replace the lifter pair and cam, back in business.

It really could be a lot worse. And big favor from Jesus - it happened in the garage. Not on the street somewhere.

Damn Darth, it's a shame to hear that.
i know the feeling of issues that keep coming up.
I hope that casting can be fixed.
If there is metal on the dipstick the right thing to do is disassemble the engine to ensure you get all the metal bits out.
From what you are describing I'm guessing lifter failure which also has wiped out a camshaft lobe.
I was looking forward to seeing this thing make it's power but oh well.

You can't trust anyone.
Well it is Satan's world for now anyway.

My travel this week got all jacked up. Sat ont he runway in Dallas in line for two hours for de-icing. Got home 3am. Slept in a bit. At work now. Hopefully tonight, I'll be able to make some progress. If I take a half hour to finish removing the heads, I'll likely know more vs just pulling the motor, but I want to get the motor out also. Decisions. For sure I want the motor out of the car by tomorrow evening if at all possible.

Shouldn't be too hard from where I'm at now, since a lot of the initial tear-down is already done. Just gotta pull some more stuff off first. Trying to not spill coolant all over the floor until I have to, so I don't have to lay in it.

Basically, driver side header, valve cover, engine front accessories, transmission bolts, what's left of harness connections, Hopefully it will come out the top with most of the stuff removed.

Are you going to dissemble the bottom end too?

not without help. I'll get it torn down to the SB first. CHevelle lives only a few hours away, and he offered to help, and I'm going to take him up on it. There are some special tools I don't have, and I don't want to have to do this twice.

I'm a metallurgist. Which likely seems very weird that I have to travel so much. Mostly I do R&D. We have a bunch of facilities. My job usually entails figuring out how to "break physics" and then once we can make a process out of it, I get back out and let manufacturing take back over.

It is odd that you would travel that much, but being able to break stuff is always fun!!!
