Default Lq9 build

Hello Everyone,
i just picked up a lq9 with 4l65e out a an 03 escalade, im throwing it into an old square body chevy and have a few questions on my mod choices.
i got a tbss intake and am thinkiing about getting some 799 heads and doing a diy p/p job, was wondering if i were to get the btr stg 4 truck cam with the factory 799 springs would work or if i would need to replace them, or would the stg 3 cam work better, not looking for a high hp strip truck, just want that lobey idle and power when i want it.

You will need valve springs with any cam with over .500 lift. Stock springs can't handle more than that

BTR's site says the stage 5 works with the LS2/LS3/LS6 stock springs. I think LS3s are 0.550 lift stock?

The Stage 4 is a 224/230, .550 lift.

I can say I run similar, a 223/231, but with .637/.617 lift. I have a little bit of lope. I have good power for my GMC.

IMO, any time you start playing with the cam, you should be matching it to a good converter. I really like my 3200 stall for my cam.

You might check youtube, Richard Holdener's channel. He did a video last week, 175 HP cam swap, and tested several cams in there on a 6.0. There's stock LQ4 vs a 206/214 vs a 224/232, as well as a 232, a 239, a 240, and a 246? YOu might find some of that interesting. Especially the stock LQ4 vs 206 vs 224 cams.

Right. LS2/3/6 all use cams with .525-.550 lift. The stock LQ4 cam is only about .480 max. It would need better springs.

Ok, for some reason i thought the stock 799 springs were .500, but since i will most likely need new pushrods as well i might as well get the whole set together. I know nothing about cams so just planning on getting an off the shelf kit.

Any idea what my setup would make at the crank vs the stock lq9. And what will the 799 heads do to my compression, i know the lq9 is 10:1.

Best recommendation is to always buy your cam and springs together from the same vendor. That way everything is matched and there’s no guess work or wondering left to do.

LQ9 + 799/243 heads is an Iron LS2 (same heads and pistons). So you'd be at 10.9:1.

Yup, and I believe LQ4's and LQ9's came with the same big chamber 317 heads. Essentially 243/799 heads with bigger combustion chambers. The LQ4 having a dished piston with the LQ9 having flat tops. And I've never seen a 243 head that didn't have yellow valve springs which indicates to me they're good to .550 lift. The L33 that currently resides in my work truck came with 243 heads and yellow springs. Maybe I've led a sheltered life though!

My personal projects over the years, I have had an L33, LS2, LQ4, and LM7. I had the yellow springs in my 243 heads as well. But I've never cracked open a set of 799s.

If I remember correctly, The later LQ9s (around 2005) use the same rotating assembly as the LS2. Before that, they were still the same piston volume but there were differences in the pistons/rods/rings.

799 and 243 heads are identical, and totally interchangeable.

You are thinking of LQ4.
From what I understand all LQ9 used LS2 rotating assembly with beefier rods and floating pistons. My LQ9 is 03 and it has LS2 rods.
In 05 LQ4 got the new beefier rod, but dished piston remained the same.

I have a set of low mile (maybe 5K miles) LS3 springs laying around. If the OP wants them, I believe they're the same as LS2 springs, just painted blue instead of yellow. I can ship them for $40. Complete set of springs, seals, and 15 retainers. Looked high and low and couldn't find the 16th one.
