Why you going to start it in the cold?

i like to let the morot get to operating temp once or twice a winter so that the oil circulates.

Horrible idea. You will never get the motor hot enough and what will happen is you will just let it idle for a bit, then shut it off and let a bunch of condensation build up in the motor.

Put a battery tender on it and let it sit. No reason to start it up at all.

A cam does not warrant changing the engine weight.

My heads/cam LS3 has run with 5w30 for 8 years and 50K miles.

On the other hand, my bored/stroked LS3 runs on 10w40.

I like the Euro Spec Mob 1 0w40. High Zn and P levels. Might not run it in a stock app, but like it in an LS with a few miles on it that I know I'm going to run the snot out of.

Put the car on a lift, about 4' high. Get some scrap lumber, and start a campfire under the oil pan. Let cook medium-rare and then start.

That's what I run in my built LS7. With the stock LS3, except a cam change, I think 5w-30 is good, but 0w-40 is a bit thicker even when cold, regardless of the 0w designation.
