how to check for crank Straightness?

Default how to check for crank Straightness?

Unfortunately,my LS2 crank has fallen from about 2.5 feet. When this happened,it looked like it fell pretty evenly . Is there a way I can check for straightness ? Can I put it in the block and see how it spins ? I feel the crank is fine but I’m no expert and looking for second opinions

Oil up all main journals, carefully put it in the block, then see if it turns. Carefully.....

I also have a mag gauge thati use for checking thrust,could I mount that and check the journals as it rotates for equal measurements?

This. You’ll want to only install bearing one and five. Leave the middle 3 out, when measuring it. Don’t set the caps on. Use a little oil on one and five. You won’t have to turn it very much to determine if it’s bent or not.

Also Check and make sure the reluctor wheel didn't get bent.

I just bailed a shop out last week with the same issue....

Fortunately, I put a billet wheel in my engine and kept the original wheel that came off mine.

You did look it over for cracks right? Prussian blue is a cheap step to give peace of mind after checking straightness. I saw an engine (ford?) with a busted crank recently. Consensus was failure to balance it but I can only imagine what a 30” drop onto concrete could do.

As a Tool and Diemaker for over 40 years, what would you use prussian blue for in this case??

Don’t want to hijack the thread I was taught by a retired usn shipwright this trick. It works really well.

from Permatex:Inspection

Permatex Prussian Blue can also be used for general inspection purposes. The paste can be applied to a surface to reveal small cracks, pits or other surface defects that may affect the part's performance. This is especially useful in the automotive or aerospace industries, where stuff must be thoroughly inspected for any signs of wear and tear. Using Permatex Prussian Blue for inspections offers the ability to visually identify and correct small defects that would otherwise be difficult to see.
