Default Cam Selection

 Discussion starter · #1 · 4h ago
I need help selecting a cam for my 6.2 LS. I’m going to have a 3.55 or 3.73 rear gear most likely with a M21. Engine has 10.5 compression with stock unmilled heads and dual plane intake with a carburetor. 2” headers with a full exhaust system. Street car with occasional strip time. I’m not worried about low speed surging. The smaller cams are only off by a couple horsepower it looks like. Which cam do you think I should go with?

No LSA specs?? They're just as important as duration and lift.

I wouldn't buy any Texas speed cam. Summit/Comp/BTR cams are way better. For your car, the Summit 8710r1 and done. Killer all around cam.

8711R1 summit cam interested me. I never purchased a summit cam so I don’t know the quality.

Comp cam 54-454-11 and the

Cam Dynamics 229/244 Hydraulic Roller Cam for GM LS Gen III/IV.

With the M21 2.20 1st gear, even 3000lbs, DualQuads recommended 8710R1 is largest I'd consider. In fact, I think you'd be better off with the 8707R1.

I thought 8710R1 was a truck cam at first.

I typed 8701 instead of 8710. That cam looks perfect for my setup. Do you guys use the lifter trays or run link bar lifters? Not sure which brand to use but summit has these in the recommended parts.

With a dual plane intake, 2" headers, 3.73 gears, & 2.20 first gear, I would look real hard at the
Cam Motion LS Hot Rod Cam 227*/237* 111* +4* .595"/.587".
You would be much happier with performance and drivability imo.

At this point, they are running the same crap from 20yrs ago which wasn't that great to begin with. I like spending my $$$ better than that. Comp is leading the pack with lobe design and BTR is putting effort into it too. Since it's slow around here these days, ask me how I feel about .660 spring kits for more controversy, lol

Whats the issue with the .660 spring kits? I was looking into the trick flow kit.

The drop in lifters are fine, I run Melling usually for cheap LS7 stuff. The good GM ones are $450 these days and the Johnson''s drop in's are like $800, but worth it. For spring kit I like the PSI 1511ML for beehives and the Summit duals are decent for the $$. PAC 1207x springs if you want to do it once and have some room later for 1.8 roller rockers(Comp Pro Mag Bolt ons, recommended).

I'm leary of them. I know everybody says they are PAC ones they are selling, but the china copies are bleeding in non-stop. I have seen several .660 kits lose like 20-30lbs of seat pressure in like 20-30k. That's a lot. I go overkill on springs anymore, because I beat on my stuff and it needs to perform and last.

Seems smaller than the 8170R1. But a slightly loopier idle with a 6* IVO compared to the 5* on the 8710R1. Cam should peak sooner by the looks of it. Wouldn’t I be making far less power with this cam?

PSI springs max lift is .625” and the summit duals max lift is .600” so I would have to use the trick flow dual springs since their max lift is .600”. The summit cam lift is .625” int. and .605” exh. Could I use that with this cam? Not sure on any other brands for the LS applications.

Navy's Cam Motion cam is a very good choice. It's a different animal than the 8710r1. The 8710r1 has a wide powerband overall, the Cam Motion cam is narrower, but will make a lot more torque overall through it's range. If you call Cam Motion, they can cut that on a different lobe and it'll have more lift, which you definitely want on a LS3 head. You just have to watch the PTV clearance and the Cam Motion cam will need to be checked for sure. The Summit cam should be checked(like every cam), but they engineered it pretty good as a drop in.
