Which one is which? The one on the bottom clearly has thicker side plates, which makes me think it could be the LS2. However, it also has split rollers, which aren't as strong as solid rollers. Maybe the top one also has split rollers and they all just happen to be pointed down in the picture?

I put one on 3 months ago and it fits on stock gears. Much more robust than LS6 see below:

The crank sprocket is part number 12556582 and it is basically unchanged from the LS1; it was used in 98-02 F-body and 97-04 Y-body. Knowing that the crank gears are the same for both applications, one could assume that the timing chains are interchangeable. The original chain for the LS6 is part number 12552954. In September of this year, GM made a part number change on the LS6 chain to the new LS2 chain; 12552954 was changed to 12586482. The new LS2 chain has a significantly different link that has an increased thickness over the old style link found on the LS1 and LS6. Incidentally, the LS1 and LS6 used the same chain.

The only difference between these two engines when it comes to the timing components is the cam gear. The LS2 cam gear is specifically made for the cam position sensor, without this gear the sensor can not locate the cam!

Therefore it would be highly unlikely that any production built LS6 ever came with the new HD LS2 timing chain, but if you need to replace the chain on your LS1 or LS6 it will be replaced with the new HD LS2, part number 12586482.
The lower chain in this pic is the 12586482 chain. I put one on my car last week. http://temp.corvetteforum.net/c5/pew.../ls2_chain.jpg

Although I can see a split roller as being weaker than a solid, I dont know just how much weaker it would be. I was planning on adding a JWIS chain when I do my winter mods, new cam plus poss. heads. I imagine that if the race teams are running the new LS2 piece, it cant be all bad, but would I be better off in going with the JWIS chain for increaded safety? Nice bit of a price difference between the two.

Thanks,

I just priced the dampner on gmpartsdirect and I was shocked. It is almost 90.00 bucks and still have to add shipping to that. Is the dampner even required for a car that is rarely raced being used as a daily driver?

The LS2 damper from us is alot cheaper than that. I will look in the morning but I want to say its less than $15.00. If you have an 04' or latter block it has the provision to use one. It is not a piece that will make a hp difference, but it will help the life of your timming chain. It just keeps it from slapping around. If you have the provision for it I would say use it to your advantage. I will post the price when I get to work in the morning.

Kris, this is Mike from North Louisiana. I'm the guy who sent you the polish from Rapid Shine Systems. I will be calling you soon to order a LS2 chain and other items to complete my needs. Thanks for the info.

I plan on a cam swap in my 01 WS6 and didn't know if changing the timing chain was needed. But it seems this LS2 piece is beefier and it would be less likely to break than the stock piece right? For the price I probably should make this swap...
