Default Starting LS7 engine

We cranked our LS7 around with the starter to build oil pressure and check the connections last night. It did not seem to build any oil pressure. We are trouble shooting the gauge tonight. It was a beast to crank - it took a jump from a car to get it to really crank.

1) Are these 11:1 engines tough to crank?
2) Should I be priming the engine or let it pull oil from the tank until it build pressure?

With proper battery voltage it should spin over as quickly as any other car.

We had an engine in the car that was previously on the dyno so it had been ran before. In the car it took a loooong time before it started building pressure, but it did.

I know it's a dumb question but do you have the oil feed and return lines right on the dry sump pan connections?

I beleive I do but to be sure...

The oil from the tank (tank bottom fitting) is going to the rear port on the pan closest to the transmission.

The return line (top tank fitting) is going to the front fitting.

What oil pressure should I expect with 5W30 Mobile 1?

You got it!

I get ~45 PSI at an idle...when the oil gets real hot it goes down to about 25 PSI. At anything above idle it's 60+ PSI.

Thanks for the confirmation. Using a new battery and good connection I had it cranking over nicely with 40 lbs on the oil pressure gauge. When setting the fuel pressure statically (not running) the first time where did you put it to get it to run? I have 35 lbs of fuel pressure now but I want 60 at idle running the same as OE but I do not want to have 10 things to look at and set when I start this up the first time!

I cheated and pre-set my fuel pressure regulator to 58PSI before I yanked out my LS6 engine!

Can't you command the fuel pump on and check the pressure at the guage? Jus ta thought. Set it to 58psi or where ever it was tuned at.

This should be set with engine running at idle. I am going to set it to 60 with the engine off to get me close then move it up once it is running.

Dumb question.........but where do you set this? Is it something that is set into the tune or what? Or can you set it somewhere by the pump? Traver

Not a dumb question. We are istalling this engine in a '66 Corvette so we had to build the fuel side from scratch. All factory EFI systems are non adjustable. You can install an aftermarket pressure regulator to allow you to raise or lower the fuel pressure. This changes the whole fuel curve richer or leaner because the change in pressure impacts the flow rate. This was a popular mod in the 90's before you could flash tune your ECM. Now that you can change the fuel curve where you need it adjusting the fuel pressure is no longer used very much. We need to set our pressure to the same pressure as the factory so the tune will work correctly when it starts. Trick is the engine should be running to set the pressure but you need pressure to get it running.
