Default C5 and C6 transmission mounted behind driveshaft???

Someone I know know told me that the trans on 5th and 6th gen vettes is mounted to the rearend. Basically he was saying that from front to back it went: engine>clutch plate>driveshaft>transmission>rearend.

I thought the driveline in the c5 and c6's was close to the same setup as an f-body but with a bit more powerloss.

Any vette gurus chime in.

Its called a transaxle. They do this on vettes for 50/50 weight distribution. GET WITH IT!

actually it is not a trans axle, the vette has a tranny and a diff that are seperate.in a trans axle they are the same.

a transaxle has the half shafts comming directly out the tranny, like on ferrari, the vet just has the tranny mounted out back. BTW who is "they" cause "they" are wrong

I personally would still consider it a transaxle, because it is still 1 unit.

It is not a transaxle. A G50 porsche is a transaxle. Transaxles are WEAK... the T56 is far from weak.

Do some research and see how much ANY transaxle that can handle 800 lbs TQ will cost. You are looking at 15-20k+.

Porsche had that setup in the 928. That was almost 30 years ago.

it is not 1 unit, the t56 trans is BOLTED to the getrag diff, to independent units, they do not share fluid. the output shaft of the t56 is splined to the ring gear of the getrag diff. not even close to a transaxle. a FWD car is a transaxle.

I think what make it interesting is that the drivsehaft spins at engine rpm. So it can spin @7,000 rather than trans output revs. It takes rubber insulators and driveshaft in a tube to pull this off.

interesting that a comment was made that the vette setup has more driveline loss. my z06 stock dyno'd at 358 to the rear wheels 405bph = 11.6% driveline loss.

there wer refering to the mag article..they tested a 98 t/a against a 98 vette I think and the t/a put down a lil more power 5-10whp.

Im pretty sure that it was that the car was actually just making more power. gm under rates a lot..

and i have always heard it referred to as a transaxle...i believe even gm techs refer to it as such.

to tall to fit in Vette? uhh....go sit in one...you might be surprised ....big difference between c4 and c5
