Default Which heads for a naturally aspirated 402 LS2 drag application?

I'm trying to get my '00 SS back on the road after almost a years time being down. My previous setup was a cam only LS1 that went 10.34@127 naturally aspirated. I blew the engine last November due to wheelies starving the motor for oil. So I'm doing some research trying to decide what will be going in the car.

I THINK I'm set on a LS2 block, so with the stock 4" bore, using a 4" stroke, naturally aspirated, drag only car, what would you suggest to use for a cylinder head? Looking for a set that is going to produce the best results. Thanks.

Depends on what type of intake you want to run. If you prefer a composite factory style intake, the ETP 4" LS7's will provide the best results. If you prefer a sheet metal or any other fabricated type manifold the 265 4" might be better. The LS7 type heads are good, but the 265's come on up top were the race type motors are gunna shine.

i'm in the same boat you are. i'm also looking for new heads for a 4'' boar, but i want to be able to street drive my car at times. e.t performance is local to me also. i'm looking at them and the new trickflo 225 head. goodluck on your hunt, with so many to choose from,it's not easy.
BEAST96Z-at what rpm's do the 265's start to come alive? will they drive on the street well?

I went with a set of ET240's on my 402, it drives very well for something as agressive as it is, taking it to the track on the 8th so we'll see what it's capable of.

gollum, could you be a little more elaborate? What intake manifold? Will my Kooks 1 7/8 headers fit? What modifications will be required to use with a 402 LS2 in a LS1 F-body?

Beast96Z, I currently have a FAST 90mm, Nick Williams 90mm, SLP 85mm MAF, and a TS&P 85mm lid. I'd like to use this setup, but don't mind changing it if need be. I want to maximize my setup for maximum results. I'm sure if I stuck with my current setup, my intake manifold would need to be ported, correct? Would a sheet metal intake be a better way to go? Please explain.

To all others, again, this is going to be a drag only car, gas mileage, driveability, etc. isn't really important to me. Its a max effort naturally aspirated motor/car.

Maybe you should run the iron block since youre having wheelie problems.

Seriously though, ls7 heads or l92 heads outflow ls1 heads by a wide margin. It could be cheap if its possible to bore out the iron block to 4.1"

Everyone is waiting for the release of the more affordable GM L92 castings ($800.00 for set complete with valves) with matching L76 intake ($500.00 complete with fuel rails, injectors, throttle body). These new heads have a straiter intake path much like the LS7 head which is more desireable for a higher performance 408 engine.

Intake Flow@200...300...400....500....600....700

ETP cnc'd.....137...211...270....310....324....336 Price $2500.00 complete

L92 as cast...153...225...277....313....335....327 Price $800.00 complete

dug, I had planned on addressing the wheelie issue with suspension adjustments. I wana stick with an aluminum block. Are you referring to the GM LS7 heads or the ETP? Now when you say that the L92 outflow the LS1 heads by a wide margin, are you referring a stock L92 head to a stock LS1 head?

gollum, the L92 heads seem to be a pretty hot ticket right now, but it doesn't really have readily parts available to make it work with a LS2 block in a LS1 F-body. At $800 for a complete set is a great deal, but I've read that the springs on them are the same ones that are used on the LS1 heads. What about the rest (retainers, keepers, valves, etc.)? How will they hold up to a drag only application with a decent amount of power?

I was just kidding about using the iron block to keep the tires on the ground. They can be bored 60 over if thats needed for the newer heads.

Why do you say my FAST 90mm intake will hold me back? What are my other options? If I chose to use a different intake, would I be able to use the rest of my intake system or will that have to be changed as well?

Yea, parts avaliability is very slow right now, but it will be veryeasy to change to better springs when ready.

We're building a 402 using L92 heads and L76 intake right now and Comp 921 springs to handle a crazy cam.

Stay tuned!

Dragaholic, the FAST intake is the bottle neck of the LSX platform. Having it ported only remedies some of the problem. A high flowing cathedral port head is gunna do you no good if the intake can't keep up with the flow of the heads. The reason I reccomended the 4" LS7 heads is because the LS7 intake flows so well, is cheap, and vendors are porting them for more gains. Take a look at my set-up for example. While I was choosing my parts, I looked at heads and intake as if they were one because one in no good without the other. On one hand, I had the ET big bore LS7 heads, which flowed more in the middle than the ET 265's, but when coupled with the intake, my 265's are gunna flow more than the LS7's because the intake I purchased is not a restriction, wearas the LS7 intake has some restriction. In your situation, using the 4" LS7 heads will make the most sense because it's affordable, and you can still use your intake tract. It just comes down to finding the best flowing intake to couple with the best flowing heads, and budget.

I don't have to stick with the FAST 90mm intake that I have. I didn't realize that it was that much of a restriction. If I need to upgrade/consider another intake, I will. I want to produce as much power and go as fast as I possibly can and I don't want anything holding me back. What I wanted to know is what heads will give me the most results and what intake I'll need to use to back it up, even if that means changing my current intake.
