Default L92 vs. LS2.... help

I couldnt do it...thats right I couldnt bring myself to convert my 10.5 shootout 1966 Chevy II to a LS street car so I am going to build what I have always wanted anyway....its little brother... 1966 Chevy II WAGON!

After reading for a few weeks and my eyes falling from my head, I want to use a complete drop out low mile gen IV...but I REALLY want to use the l92 stuff. SO....do I find a Denali take out or get an LS2 and do the head thing.

Here are my requirements.... aluminum block, L92 heads, as stock as possible (i.e. complete takeout with trans), and 500 crank HP.

I assume a cam change is in order and have experience with EFI live....soooo
whuddya guys think?

oh and what about eliminating all the dod stuff? I still want mileage so if I am running all the factory harnesses would it hurt performance?

I think the cost for a L92 takeout is gonna be pretty high. I'd go LS2 and L92 heads and L76 intake. Bump up the compression a bit, cam it, and have fun with what ya got. Will move the nova Wagon just peachy.

Thanks for the input. Thats certainly the LS2 option isnt it...but if an low mile LS2 is 3000 and the heads and intake run 1400 (plus all the peripherals like rockers gaskets p-rods etc.) and I can get a complete L92 for 5000.00 then...... what are the advantages of the ls2?

I am still wondering about the HP potential of these L92's with a simple cam change and tune....anyone tried it yet?

L92 just has a few more cubic inches, and its basically an LS3 in a truck. So all you have to do is change the dam fugly truck intake to the australian L76 with all the rest of the things needed, cam it, tune it, and 500+hp is easily obtainable.

Agreed..... plus I dont think the 66' hood will fit well with that blob....

Or....third option....LS3 crate? I'd be saving the $ from the l76 intake swap right? but then I am still under the power goal....

hmm.......

Don't want to sound stupid, but why wouldn't the LS6 intake work on the L92? Why do you need an L76 intake? What the heck is an L76 intake?

Intake port shape and configuration are completley different. The bolt holes are even changed.

Good question, you wont find out if you dont ask or have some experience with LSX parts interchangability.

why not get a iron block and l92 heads do a little head work on the l92s (open the exhaust ports) and start from there?? i know you stated you wanted aluminum but i was just curious.

course if you are going for a pull out it really doesnt matter you will have all you need for the l92 set up minus the intake and rails.

The ls3 crate would be your easiest option. Just cam it and add good pipes and you will have your 500 crank HP easily. My 6.0l with a small cam makes roughly that on a Aussie Dynalog.

cheers

Thanks again guys...after another week of thought and research it look like the LS3 is going to be it. The question becomes..... do I wait for GM to release it as a GMPP crate with thier cam upgrade or buy it now as a replacement and do my own cam swap. I am HOPING GM's LS376/480HP is rated using SAE stds. and it actually makes 500+ ....does anyone know????

Oh and one other question.... are they using DBW throttle bodies on the crate LS3's?

(I realize they haven't been released yet but maybe some of the insiders can shed some light here)

I would get a ls2 block,bore it and put a 4in crank in it = 408
The add a set of L92's with LW valves and proper camshaft with a ported L76 intake.

600HP easy.....

We have a 540HP/490TQ L92 HO that would work well for your swap.

Perhaps I should clarify my reasons here. I am no stranger to performance engine building after doing it professionally for over 15 years and now doing performance aftermarket consulting. What I wanted to do was NOT have to build an engine (for the first time) but rather plug it in and go.......

Dont get me wrong...I already have conceded to a cam swap (if necessary) and I have a bare L92 casting sitting in front of me as I type this ( A present from a friend to entice me ) but I really would rather spend more time with the body/chassis/etc. on this project.

now about that dbw throttle body....on the crate LS3?
