Default Oil priming

When the time comes what is the proper way to prime my oil system in my 6.0 LS2 block?? The drill through the dist. hole no longer applies here. Thanks

I just rolled the car over with the plugs out for about 30 seconds after it had good pressure. then finished putting the engine together and fire it up.

The front cover with the distributor drive won't do you any good, as the oil pump is driven directly off the crank, not the distributor shaft as in the SBC/BBC engines. The crank needs to turn in order to cause the oil pump to pump oil.

There is a plug on the drivers side of the block, behind where an F-body alternator sits. That plug leads to an oil "tube"(for lack of a better word), anyway you just take the plug out and then pump oil into the motor until you see oil in the valve train. Thats the only way to really "Prime" the oil system. Most people just crank it some until it builds pressure.

Here is a pic.

pull the ignition relay and fuel pump fuse and crank until it builds.

GM actually has a primer kit that can be bought. I used one from a local Chevy dealership. There was minimal lag before we got oil pressure.

I have a primer I bought from an aircrft engine company. It is a pressure pot design, you put the amount of oil you want in it and put 50 psi of air pressure in the top hook it in any oil galley and open the valve. It is a pretty trick little deal, it has a ph1 filter on the side and a pressure regulator.
Sorry I cant remember the company I bought it from but you may want to do a search for aircraft engine tools. I think it was about $300 I use it on everything now, even non LSX engines it is easier than pulling the distributor and you can start the engine right away before the oil has a chance to drain all the way back.

I built my own oil accumulator out of a propane tank. You essentially weld a pipe and cap on top to fill it, have a tube that goes from the bottom of the tank to that plug in the above picture, and finally have an air line hook up at the top of the tank. Fill the tank with oil, hook your line to the engine, and the air pressure will force the oil through every spot in the engine.

Many machine shops around here have them for diagnostic purposes. You are able to find internal engine leaks with the pan off and and engine off.

Just dont use more than like 60psi incase of some sort of rubber seals in certain engines.

do you by any chance have a better of where that plug is? and is it threaded or how do you remove it?
