Default Best engine for a DD?

Hey guys,

Im currently in afghanistan but I got a 99 SS for when i get back and have plenty of money for some upgrades. I am gonna get an s60/ suspension/ headers/ ls7 clutch, but I dont know what would be the best engine for a daily driver with like 500rwhp..here is the 3 im looking at

Scoggin dickey complete el toro L92 427

a 402/l92heads/l72 intake

or a 402/ TFS or afr heads/fast 90/90

i have heard the stroke is a little to long for a dd for the l92 427 but besides that any help would be greatly appreciated

Any of those combinations will work, depending on the cam. Keep the duration low and it will drive OK. With the cost of pump gas going up .10 per week, I would be thinking about a small motor.

Yeah, I just picked up a 02 WS6 and I can actually watch the gas gauge move when I punch it I'll be broke before I know it...

How about a Cobra? I don't drive mine every day, but a few times per week I will drive it to work. Its not too bad on gas if you stay out of boost. If you do that much work work to your engine you are going to have a serious guzzler. I guess it all depends on how much daily driving you will be doing. Will you have a long commute?

Yeah, I had 4.10s in my WS6. It was not easy on the wallet when it came to gas.

are you kidding me?? Mach 1s and CObras do worse than F bodys on gas, if the Fbody is a M6... especially if a lot of highway driving will be the case...

mehh im stuck on the ls1...you think a forged 347 witrh afr 205s would do better on gas? Even if it put out like 475rwhp that would be ok

Im looking at like a 15 mile commute to work and school, so yeah gas is kind of an issue.

any suggestions would be great

My 403 L92 headed build could very easily be a DD. 510/470 and it drives pretty much like stock. I drive the vette in bumper to bumper DC traffic 35 miles each way without any problems or regrets.

Complete build info here: (long but interesting)

The six speeds to great on the highway because of their .5 6th but truthfully in my experience the 4.6 in real driving do a little better (not the gov’s tests) I usually get around 20.5 (winter) to 22 (summer) all city driving in my mach M5 while my buddies Z28 A4 gets about 20 and he does a decent amount of highway driving. Plus I've gotten close to 30 on highway trips. Either way stock the car’s pretty much will give you the same MPG’s my guess is better city for 4.6 better highway for a M6 LS1. That aside a boosted up Cobra would definitely do better on gas than a 402 or 427 because if you not getting in to the boost it will give you pretty much the same mileage as a Mach 1 or stock Cobra The same would be true of a FI LS1 and if you’re looking for a DD you can push a lot more and it will drive just like stock because you really won’t have to change out the stock cam.

EDIT plus LS1 f-bodies don’t have many options that are not centrifuge style chargers which is good when it comes to mileage because the boost comes on much higher up in the rpm range

hey thanks for all the info, WKMCD do you get any detonation with that compression ratio?

As far as the engine goes, im open to anything. I just what ones with a decent cam, good idle, and it would be nice to have mileage around 20mpg on the highway. But even in my old lt1 Z M6 id only get like 22-23 on the highway with only bolt ons

BTW i have like 35k in the bank from this 15month deployment so im set on money for now, i think ive earned a little present for myself lol

Personally if fuel costs are an issue. Id stay with the stock engine and add all the good bits in. 500rw is possible stock. Patrick and Tony M have done this as have a few others with tfs heads etc.
224/228 cam, afr/tfs heads, fast92/92 and you should be mid/high 400's anyway.

Also is ther much point buying a new engine if you want a new car? Unless you are going to swap them over I guess. In which case go the 402

Not at 11.3 that I'm running now.

I average about 15MPG driving any damn way I please. About 20-21 cruising on trips

BTW i have like 35k in the bank from this 15month deployment so im set on money for now, i think ive earned a little present for myself lol
Thanks for your service.

You've definitely earned that and more. I've got about 12k in my build but that includes replacing my 1 3/4 LT's with 1 7/8 AR LT's, a $1200 clutch, etc, etc, etc.

PM me for a ph number if you want to talk about it. If you read all of that post, I have no secrets in this build - yet.

BTW: The little bit of extra bore in the L92 block over the LS2 block is important and unshrouds the exhaust valve.

hey thanks to all you guys. I try and get on this site as much as possible, but obviously cant get on every day or post a lot....you guys have some great combos and im gonna look into them.

I was looking into heads/cam headers/ 90/90 too but I dunno if i wanna do it on the stock shortblock especially the rods/bolts I know thats a weak point. If i do those i may as well do a rotating assembly, and by the time i get the block preped bored, honed, it would be easier and about the same price as a 402 shortblock...so thats where i am right now.I already have a ported fast 90/90, some suspension and a magnaflow from when i was on leave and I pretty much had the deal and the seller backed out at the last minute.

Basically i just want something that will be reliable, and fuel mileage is decent...so keep the suggestions coming!

thanks
