If the engine is an LS1, it is a Gen III engine, and this question should be in the Gen III Internal forum.

This needs to be moved to GEN III Internal Engine Forum... To answer your question go with Mobil 1 5w-30 (full synthetic) if a stock bottom end engine, even with engine work (heads, cam, intake, etc.) and good oil filter Wix XP, avoid fram filters for engine oil.

Avoiding fram is an absolute myth. The Fram Ultra is one of, if not, the best filter you can buy.

Expensive oil choice: amsoil/redline
Med priced: Pennzoil ultra plat
Lower: Pennzoil plat
Lowest: supertech from Walmart or Amazon basics synthetic

There are enough war stories to refute your high opinion of Fram. Enough have been cut open to prove the low quality.

Oh you mean those orange can frams? They are built for 3000 miles on conventional oil. That is it.

Go to YouTube and look up fram ultra synthetic cut out. Then find one better. You'll be shocked at how good it is. I was.

First and foremost I would try and figure out where the oil is leaving the engine from (leak vs burning). At that point I would focus on the best way to tackle the problem. If its a leak just replace whatever gasket etc, If its burning and you can do a leak down and detect where from just go from there. I have seen a few cases where decreasing the viscosity has helped (in a burning engine oil case) however thats really just a band aid temporarily.

Take a quick look inside the intake manifold make sure its not a PCV issue before you start going crazy.

Perhaps I wasn't being specific enough for you to say "avoiding fram is an absolute myth". Fram Orange filters avoid like the plague.... Never heard of the "Fram Ultra" before had to look it up for myself, seems they want to redeem themselves for the crappy older orange ones.
