Default GEN V NON DOD Lifter VS LS7

Just wondering if there is any difference in a GEN V NON DOD lifter versus the typical LS7 lifter? Beside the fact it needs a .050 longer pushrod.

Thanks!

Well I would say that DOD(AFM) sucks and non-DOD having LS motors don't suck. This is probably also true for the GEN 5 SBC as well. I can't tell when my car is or isn't in AFM mode or whatever you want to call it, but one of my least favorite things about my GEN 6 SS is the fact that it has DOD.

I work with a guy who has a friend who had a GEN 6 SS which apparently had lifter issues and the cam was taken out. I told him it could of been due to the DOD setup. I don't think converting a new LT1 over to a non-DOD setup is a bad thing especially if out of warranty. Isn't it pretty straight forward? Lifters/pushrods/tune? IDK for sure though as I've never done it.

Hmmm.

For some reason I went on a rant giving my opinion about AFM in your thread without even attempting to help with your question. I apologize for that. Truth is IDK, but that's a very good question and I'd also like to know what the difference between LS7 and the non-DOD LT1 lifters are as well.

BTW my understanding is the manual cars don't use DOD, but the GEN5 motors still use the dumbass DOD lifter setup regardless of whether they have DOD or not. That's what I read anyways.

I'm using them on an LS1. After accounting for changes to cam, heads milled, gasket thickness, pushrod length, preload, these lifters are about .020-.030 deeper seat compared to ls1 stock. This makes sense sort of since I think ls7 lifters take a shorter pushrod than ls1, but I don't have an ls7 lifter to directly compare.

As far as I have heard and read, LS7 lifters are a direct replacement for all LS lifters, to the point that they are now the default service replacement LS lifter.

LS7 lifters are used as direct replacements for LS1 lifters because the changed preload is still within acceptable limits. I don't know about other LS lifters, but it's simpler and probably cheaper for GM than having to stock exact replacements for slightly different lifters.

Adding some info that's not anywhere else I could find.
I measured the total plunger travel of a gen V lifter and an LS1 lifter:
LS1: .155
gen V: .138

LS7 is supposed to be .166 (part #17122490)
