quote from mahle
"Mahle pioneered the use of piston ring simulation and computer development tools to develop rings that provide "free" horsepower by successfully minimizing friction. The difference is evident on the dyno and on the track. Mahle's ultra-flat ring flanks maximize ring-to-piston sealing. The top rings are a ductile iron, plasma-moly, barrel-face configuration. The second rings are a cast iron reverse twist. The oil rings are a 3-piece style and are offered in both standard and low tension. A large selection of coordinated piston ring sets is available in a variety of sizes, designed to exceed your high performance requirements."

TECH Junkie
Thanks Bob, Mahle & a few others are on the list. Problem I have w/ using Mahle is that the stock LS1/LS6 uses Mahle pistons & am a$$uming rings. Although, the top ring coating on a stock LS1 appears to be different than the finish of any plasma-moly coated ring that I've seen. Further, am pretty sure that term "plasma" relates to the coating process, as much as, a material. So, either Mahle found the flaking problem & has since modified their top ring coating process, or the stock rings are not from Mahle, of which would seem silly to me. IDK, may end up floating the cash for a ductile iron, ductile iron coated top ring that needs replacing every 50k miles. I gotta dig some more & see what else can be found about the stock top ring coating.
