Slow Train With [my] Fast Car
Greetings from the Delta! I found out last week that my 2004 GTO was put on the train in Cali on Aug 18th. Next phone call I get from the dealer will be THE call of my young life!
So here's my progression:
sophomore year of college, 1997, I have a 1992 s-10 Pick up with NOTHING left in it. We have gone through 4 exhaust manifolds since we got it. They had a problem with cracking and sending exhaust back through the heat riser and clogging the air filter. It had a small cab and I'm not small. Translation--uncomfortable and slow. Oh, and school was in the Ozark mountains...I got passed a lot.
Then I graduated and got the first paycheck. Ran to the dealer and got a 2002 Grand Prix (Program Car). 3.1 L V6. To me, on my way back home Sunday night, it may have well been a Lamborghini. I was passing s-10's in the corners going up hill. Now I wish I had looked a bit harder for the 3.8 SC.
So this past March I fell in love with the GTO and made the deal to place the order. Living where I do, finding Black/Black/M6 with less than 50 miles on it was tough, so I decided to take the wait and place the order.
That brings us to today. SOON I will hold the keys to My Goat. I want to enjoy every minute of the first ride.
I have no intentions of wasting the HP on this baby. Gonna go down the road a ways and get a feel for it (nope, never even got to test drive one). Then I wanna have some fun.
What're your top RPMs before dumping the clutch? I want the first time I dump it to throw me in the back seat....
J--

Just got the call. It is on a trailer in Memphis and will be here either Thursday (9/2) or Friday (9/3). I live an hour and a half from the dealer , but Dad is only 15 minutes away. He's gonna snap some pics as it rolls off the trailer.
Asphalt watch out, here I come!

Yeah buddy!! Congrats!! I remember getting my camaro..... You'll like your new car. As far as the RMP's go for your launch......I say rev that bad boy up to 6k and dump her. Smoke the tires a little, then hit the road.

Driver left Memphis this morning with it. I'm waiting for either 4:30 to leave work (a bit early) or a phone call saying the truck has entered the parking lot. Dad is on hand with his camera (Retirement must be nice). He "conveniently" had to take his Jimmy in for service today.....I'll have TONS of pics within 48 hours!
I've been up since 4am twitching with anticipation...

At 5:15 Thursday night, the Dealer called and said the truck had not shown. He said that they are supposed to call if they want to deliver after 5pm. So I would have to wait until Friday.
At 6:45 he called back. He was on his way to a football game and came up on a vehicle transport with a black GTO on it. Listen to what this guy did for me:
He flagged down the driver of the truck and asked him to take it to the lot. He recalled that there were several things to do to make the car road ready, so he told me I'd have to pick it up in the am. I called Dad and told him the deal. Dad decided to go up and take some pics. At 7:15 dad called and said "come on!" Bob called in the service manager. The truck diver unloaded her and parked under the street light. I was the NEXT person to get into the car! I helped Gary (SM) cut off the boots around the rotors. While I signed the papers, he installed the glove box. I noticed there were no lights on the instruments, so Gary went online and found out that it ships with no radio or instrument panel fuses. It took a minute or two (or ten) to find the fuse panel. Then Gary saw the spring rubbers. I drove it up on the alignment rack and we put it in the air. What a beautiful underside! We pulled the spring blocks and dropped it. Then Bob followed me to the Gas station and bought me a full tank of gas (high-octane of course). And I was on my merry way. Bob probably got home around 10:15 last night. He missed the game.
This dealership is an hour and a half away. Many of my colleagues question my decision to not use a local guy whom I've never met. Last night was Exhibit A. Not many people can say they got this level of treatment from a dealer. This is our 19th year of doing business with Bob Lucky, and I couldn't be happier!
Oh, and the car is nice, too!
FYI, the dealership is Lucky's Chevrolet, Pontiac, GMC in McGehee, AR. If you are within 100 miles, give him a chance to treat you as well as he treats me and my family!!

Pics of her being unloaded. The second one of me is me realizing that on a 6-speed, reverse is UP, not back Apparently the truck driver had the same problem backing her off the trailer.
More pics to come, stay tuned!
