Default Future Project...what do you think??(Longish)

I love my new Monte a lot, but I miss my ole 96 Cutlass Supreme...so....

I was thinking about saving up some money, and time off...and doing an LSX swap into my old 96 Cutlass Supreme.

It is a normal 3.1 V6, so i know the 3800's fit in there, and (I hope) the LS4 would as well, if not an LS1/LS2.

So what do you guys think, waste of money??? It wouldn't do it for anything but my own enjoyment, and as a hobby build etc.

I know it would cost a lot of $$$ and I don't plan on doing it anytime this decade, but an LS1/LS2 rear wheel drive 1996 Cutlass Supreme would make a lot of people scratch their heads, and I think it would be a lot of fun and hard work to make it.

Super sleeper, that N* Grand Prix GTP whatever got me thinking about a manual W-Body, and I have been reading about some 5th Gen Monties that have been converted, just thought it would be fun.

If your going to do it to a Gutlass do it to a vert! Not a coupe.

Yeah a vert would be more worth while...but I like the coupe better. I did my best to keep my 96 in great condition but in the last year she has been hit twice, and after 13 michigan winters things are starting to rust here and there.

So a convertible would be fun, but the moment you chop off that top the whole car is less rigid and that is never a good thing. If an LS1 or LS2 is going in it i wouldn't want it to be a vert...need all the strength you can get.

I realize all that, but you asked about it being a waste of money! Well almost all cars that are restored are a waste of money, at least the money put into it and gotten out of it. But if you were to do this mod to a vert (which is already hard to come by, it might be more economical). But you also say its for your own enjoyment! Right on! That's the reason most cars are restored or in this case modded. Do it to it bro!! can't wait to see the results! Oh and real wheel drive??? You will have to have the floor pans remade by hand with a hump for the driveshaft! Lots of coin there unless you can do the work yourself, I can, can you? I did lots of resto's in my day of bodywork.

If you enjoy it and have fun then its never a waste of money. When your old all you have are your memories, so you better make some good ones.
If i was working with that car i would just swap in a 3.8 with a cartunning turbo kit and have a 11 second sleeper.. Also huge amounts of parts for those.

Good point stealth, it would be a great project and lots of fun.

The 3.8 is very tempting, but I really love V8's now...an LS4 set up with a turbo and a custom transmission would be a lot of fun too.

A lot less work to just swap the engine and leave it FF. I just always wanted my old cutlass to be rear wheel drive, I just like the way the car looks, nice and square...like the good ole days.

they have made rwd drive cavaliers, sunfires, grandams, grand prixs etc. so i'm sure you could do it to the cutlass. You just better learn to weld and fabricate

it wouldn't take that much money to convert to rwd if u can weld and fab. Most of the money will be in the driveline, with junk yard parts doing it yourself it could be like $3000-7000 depending on choice of engine, trans, rear diff, suspension, steering.
