Cold Start / Tranny Question

Cold Start / Tranny Question
Tell me if this is normal for our cars but when i start the car for the first time of the day and take it out for a drive while the engine warming up, the car kinda jerks like the tranny struggling a tiny bit with a steady foot on the pedal.. When it warms up in 5 mins from driving its runs fine.. I give it about 30 secs in hot weather before i put it in drive and head off. Is this normal, ?

Steve,
Did it always do this? Sometimes when cold fluid starts running in the trans it is not thin enough to get everywhere it really needs to be. What I mean by this is in very tight spaces. Once it warms up then it has thinned out enough to get in there. I have heard this happening before. With the precaustions you take, you should be fine.

Steve,
I would go no more than 30k on trans fluid. I am very cautious like this though. It's just my personal opinion. I change my trans. fluid and filter once a year. Like I said, that's me though. If it was me and I owned your car I would get a filter and fluid change done. If anything it is a good place to start plus will offer a little piece of mind.

I usually wait a minute or two after a cold start before I drive anywhere, but yesterday or the day before I pulled off right away and felt what you mention in your OP.
I agree with Mike's assessment of the fluid not making it everywhere it needs to be to shift properly.

couple trains of thought on that. Generally most feel it is a good idea as long as you have been doing it all along. If you are following the schedule in the owners manual and such. Other thought is that if you have not done it, it can do more harm than good, loosening up gunk that then starts clogging passages. I have done it both ways. Had a TH400 (one tough SOB tranny) behind a relatively weak 7 liter (425) Cadillac engine and flushed it about every 40K miles. Took a crap on me at about 95K miles. Had a 4L60E (notoriously weak) in my Caprice behind an LT1 (higher output than the big block Caddy) and flushed it exactly never. It went 235K miles before I had to replace it. So, for myself, I decided to replace the fluid in my 4T65-HD every 75K miles, but NOT flushing it out. We shall see how that goes.
