Default LS4 Cam swap

I have a friend that wants one done, Ive done probably 25 cam swaps on fbodys, vettes, TBSS's, trucks, etc, but never have done a fwd 5.3. Book time calls for 18 hours and r&r on the engine. Is there a way to do it without droping the engine?

yes, you can lift the car up.

seriously though it's pretty time consuming.

You could drill a hole in the fender, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's a major structural area of the car and an important crush zone.

50-75hp across the power band. You would have to ditch that intake though.

The swap can be done in a weekend. It's not too hard; just hard on the wallet!

Think about it Mel.. You could pull the engine and paint the block hugger orange, polish the cylinder heads, and front cover. Just imagine all of the detail!

LMAO. So true too.

Any idea what kind of camshaft would be good for a daily driver? I'm basically looking for something that would provide more power yet retain a stock-like idle. Also I'd like to retain DoD. I'd be changing out the intake as well: LS1 or LS2 or LS6.

Nate?

They make DoD cams but they're for the 6.0l G8 GT. So they'll be pretty big and won't make the best DD, so for this I recommend getting rid of DoD. For a good 5.3l DD cam I'd stay between 216/220 and 220/224. Too much more and you'll lose too much low end and too much less and you'll be wishing you had gone bigger.

I would just add some 1.8 roller rockers to the stock cam if you want to keep the DOD functional. See if Nate will sell you his old LS6 intake set-up

Excellent advice

For a daily driver I would go with a Lunati voodoo cam
Part Number: 20540710

Hydraulic roller. Excellent increase in torque and midrange power! Great LS-6 replacement performance camshaft. Works well with 5.3-5.7 liter engines.
•Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 262/268
•Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 212/218
•Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .531"/.531"
•LSA/ICL: 113/109
•Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
•RPM Range: 1400-6200
•Includes: Cam Only

This one is very close to my cam which is pretty lumpy. I shift at 6800.
3.69 gears with a 3500-3800 stall is strongly recommended!
Part Number: 20540713

Hydraulic roller. Excellent increase in torque and midrange power! Has exceptionally wide power band with very crisp throttle response. A good all around street performance camshaft.
•Advertised Duration (Int/Exh): 267/273
•Duration @ .050 (Int/Exh): 217/223
•Gross Valve Lift (Int/Exh): .549"/.549"
•LSA/ICL: 113/109
•Valve Lash (Int/Exh): Hyd/Hyd
•RPM Range: 1800-6400
•Includes: Cam Only

I want to get rid of the low end torque.

I'd really like to shift the power curve to the right.

Sure they make DoD/AFM cams for the G8 GT but maybe I should just get a custom one.
