Like the title says lately I've been hearing about people putting nitrogen in their tires. Does it really help mpg? Life of tires? btw its $10 a tire to fill with nitrogen here at a local shop

I haven't filled the tires in two years. It stays at 30 psi strong. Just don't put compressed air in them or your tires will be tainted and have to be purged/refilled etc. There should be some write ups on the internet.

Nitrogen is used because tires filled with nitrogen won't fluctuate pressure when temperatures rise and fall. It's best used with vehicles that have tire pressure monitoring systems and lazy owners who don't check and adjust their pressure often.

I think it's something about water molecules in compressed air. Racing teams use it too.

So assumptions are that your system is "sealed" to begin with, mine isn't, finding I have to tighten the plastic nuts once a year.

Sorry guys, just re-read my post and forgot to mention that 95% nitrogen filled tires fluctuate pressure less than compressed air does. Air contains about 78% nitrogen so it isn't really anything worth while.

I do all my tires because it's free for me.

I wouldn't pay for it, but it really does make the air pressure in the tires consistent. Especially now when it's 50 at night, and almost 90 in the afternoon.
