Yeah, all 2011 and up vehicles require Dexos oil. Mobil 1 or any full synthetic actually exceeds the specifications, so that is fine to use. But straight up regular 5w30 is now a no no. From what I understand and have read, the Dexos is kind of a semi-synthetic blend.

That to I forgot that. I don't know why they are having them use it though why not just say a full syn.

It doesn't have to be a full synthetic oil but all full synthetic oils do exceed it as well as blend oils. Pennzoil conventional meets it. Don't fall for the hype its another bull **** excuse for gm to make you think you need to come back to them for service. And my credentials for those of you who are thinking im full of ****, I've been a manager of a leading quick lube for 8 years.

It's irritating in all honesty, as only the 2011's require it, and we don't do enough volume in the Dexos in the shop yet to warrant it's own bulk dispenser. So I'm stuck pumping the stuff out of 55 gallon metal drums.

She got scammed like I said any brand name conventional meets it. Dexos is their way to moving towards a gf4 oil. Pop the hood of any 2011 Mazda Honda acura they all take 0w20. Which is only available in a blend from a company you've never heard of or a full synthetic at 8 bucks a qt. #emptywallet lol

http://www.gmdexos.com

Found the info I was looking for:

In North America, starting with the 2011 model year, GM introduced dexos 1™ certified engine oil as a factory fill and service fill for gasoline engines. The reasons for the new engine oil specification are as follows:
• To meet environmental goals such as increasing fuel efficiency and reducing engine emissions.
• To promote long engine life.
• To minimize the number of engine oil changes in order to help meet the goal of lessening the industry's overall dependence on crude oil.

dexos 1™ is a GM-developed engine oil specification that has been designed to provide the following benefits:
• Further improve fuel economy, to meet future corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) requirements and fuel economy retention by allowing the oil to maintain its fuel economy benefits throughout the life of the oil.
• More robust formulations for added engine protection and aeration performance.
• Support the GM Oil Life System, thereby minimizing the replacement of engine oil, before its life has been depleted.
• Reduce the duplication of requirements for a large number of internal GM engine oil specifications.

This is all true but what it doesn't say is which oils meet it, they're implying only gm carries it, which is not the case. Pennzoil has been using that "robust formula" for the last 2.5 years. Just my .02

My boss said there is a lot of oils that meet or exceed the dexos oil but they don't want to pay for the rights to put that on their labels.
