What are the differences between the LS4

What are the differences between the LS4

and the LS2? Besides the bore Dia.

If I am not mistaken the block is actually shorter, different stroke(?). Not real sure about the last one. Different cam, intake etc.

Crank is machined down on the ends and the accessory drive is more compact.

^^^ that and the LS4 has lower rpm rated LS1 type valve springs. Those are the most notable differences.

Yes... the heads are the same (LS6), however as I mentioned the valve springs are the older LS1 type instead of the higher rpm rated springs that the LS2 gets.

No... the cam is different. It is a dual-pattern (sorta)... DoD valves get a .492 lift... non-DoD valves get a .482 lift. It is more comparable to the cam in the LH6 truck engine which has .492 lift on all the valves.

Everything is listed here except the cams specs.

The LS1tech database was acting weird when I first posted... I couldn't tell if it actually made it in there... so I reposted it.

It is a normal LS type motor. Nearly everything on the LS4 is comparable to the LS2.

Only if you use a longitudinal tranny that has the same bolt pattern as Gm's front wheel drive transmissions. A tranny from a 3800 powered F-body should work. . . in theory

.If your gonna do that then why not just get a LS1, LS2,LS6, LS7. Those motors are probably way more plentiful than a LS4. Just my .02 .

So a tranny from a 3.8 camaro will not bolt onto a ls1 motor ?

To the best of my knowledge GM uses the 4L60E tranny in the F-Body. This trans is behind the V8 and the V6.

If this is the case then the 3800 in the camaro/firebird has a differant bolt pattern then the 3800's in the FWD cars. The LS4 is bolted to the 4t65e ,which is used in GM FWD vehicles,So it has a differant bolt pattern than a normal LS1, LS2 . . .

The 4T65e's used in the LS4 cars have a different case than the 4T65e's used in the v6 cars. GM used quite a bit of the LSx pieces with the LS4. It seems logical that if they went to the trouble of using a unique tranny case, they would keep LSx bolt pattern. But then again, GM does some odd things on occasion.
