Default GXP Winter Tires

I want to get winter tire and rim package. What would be a good package to get. would 17 " rim work on this car.

Has anyone driven the OE tires in snow?

Many people that have driven in the snow claim she handles well in it on the stock Bridgestone's. However, those that are on their second go-round with winter have opted for a 17" winter package from TireRack.

Here's one reference from ClubGP:

Default I picked up tires from tire rack

I have picked up tires from tirerack.

wheel: Sport Edition F7 17x7.5
Front: Pirelli Snow Sport 245 50/ 17
Rear : Pirelli Snow Sport 235 55/ 17

This will keep the same diameter from OE.

Did anyone have any luck with Pirelli snow tires?

I have had luck with them bubbling the sidewalls on the rear of a Neon, on the interior side (the side toward the wheel well) of the tire, with the correct pressure in them, and without hitting anything... The other one was on the front, opposite corner...

BTW, it's not warrantiable, because they told me I must have hit something and pinched the tire to have that happen... Tires had less than 1000 miles on them, and I had driven every mile of that, and positively hit nothing.

Those are good tires (blizzaks), and I've been VERY happy with the Michelin X-Ice tires on the wife's Neon these days too... Much better in the dry or wet than the Perelli's and about the same in the snow...

Default blizzacks vs pirelli snow tires

I would of chose the blizzaks, but to keep the diameter of the tire the same, the only manufacturer was pirelli for snow tires.

the bridgstone blizzaks did not have the size of tire that I needed.
Front: 245 50/ 17
Rear : 235 55/ 17
I was unsure what side affects from the tire that has a different diameter from OE. I know the benefit of the same size tire all around, but the car would handle.

I am probably beeting a dead stick regarding this issue, but I want to be cautious on tires.

In snow if you do anything different than stock, you definately want to go skinny

I personally like to choose 5-10mm narrower than stock.

Exactly! in the snow, you want a smaller contact patch for more surface pressure on the biting surfaces of the tire... (surface pressure is PSI, so if you take down the square inches, and have the same amoung of weight, they're going to get a higher PSI)

When I used to do the SCCA Club-Rally thing in college, it was funny, some of the pro guys were using what looked like space-saver spare wheels, with what looked like tractor tires on them... The FIA guys say that they have more traction with those 4" wide tires, studded in the snow, than they do on the regular gravel stages... you can't go too skinny on the street though, because you still want them to handle and brake well on dry and wet pavement... Everything's a trade-off, so you just typically go 10mm less than the factory width, and make up the height with going 5% larger on the aspect ratio, like going from a 215/50 to a 205/55 for winter tires...

Any comments on the pirelli winter carving tire for our cars?

Size wise, I'll probably go 205/60/16. My old blizzacks are 215/60/16, but if you do the math, compared to stock 245/50/16, the 205 is closer.

Were these tires a decent choice? I know if I wanted better snow traction, smaller is better, but will I be disapointed with the choices that I have made.

mspeterso,

I think those are too wide for snow tires, and you wont be able to rotate them front/rear.

You don't need the best handling in winter.

Eddie,

Which pirelli snow tires are bad?

I'm seriously considering their 'snow carving' model. Seems to get reasonably good reviews.
