Valve Tap?? Hello everyone just joined the foums i just got an 07 black GXP and i cant wait to do some of the mods you guys have talked about! Before i tackle all of that however I was wondering if any of you guys had any valve tap noises from your engines its a fairly loud ticking and has happend on start up 3 or 4 times since i got it. It only has 4500 miles and the oil level has always been fine. Any ideas? Thanks!

I also wanted to ask if this might have something to do with the lifter design i still havent quite grasped the VVT consept yet but i was reading about the 5.3 and it did mention something about the lifters but i have been having trouble locating detailed information about how the system exactly works.

Just to start, the system in the LS4 is Active Fuel Managment, no VVT.
Anywho, My Impala SS would get a valve tap like sound some cold mornings as well, though not every time. It did this up until it hit 10k miles or so. It normally only lasted a few minutes. I was nearly ready to take it to the dealer when it suddenly went away. 7k miles later, it hasn't done it once.
Perhaps one of the others here can give their experiences. I personally haven't worried too much about it since it left. Only because I'll prolly never convince a dealer to open her up to find out what it was.

Besides the exhaust, what should you be hearing at startup. I don't know what "valve tap" sounds like, but i'd guess that i've got it and have had it for a while. My engine definitely doesn't sound great at startup...esp in the cold...and i'll never be able to be at the dealer when it's still cold when starting to get their opinion.

On a hydraulic lifter set-up, it is usually due to lack of oil pressure allowing the lifter to pump itself up on a cold start.
Well I work at a Buick GMC store as a lot guy, all the new aluminum motors have slight "tick or knock" at startup..all the 5.3's in Tahoes and Sierras knock when it's cold. GM refers to iit as Piston slap..its common

yeah, my LT1 has had both cold start lifter tick and piston slap for the last 235K miles. (later on, the ever-popular cold start exhaust leak joined in). I am not too concerned about the slight lifter tick my LS4 has in cold weather, once I switch to synthetic, I expect it to diminish greatly.
