Default MAF screen

so the little V8 pops a lean code the other night. Have a few minutes this morning and take apart the intake to get me a look-see (I had removed the front intake tube and sealed the gaps between the box and the area behind the headlight with some closed-cell foam to keep the engine compartment heat out). MAF screen is sideways in the tube. Deformed a little as well. Apparently the elements do not like unsmoothed air over them. No foreign material in there. Just looks like the little glue they had on the edges let go and the air flow pushed it in. Got it back in (mostly, deformed, remember?), but I fear it won't stay where it belongs for long. Put it all back to stock to see if that makes a difference. Any ideas on how to resecure that screen in permanently? The cold air foam trick made a big difference in SOTP, but if it is going to try to cram my screen into the intake, gonna have to stay stock.

It is pretty obvious what to do once you stick your head down there (as in most things). Some closed cell foam made to seal room air-conditioners works well and has held up so far.

Actually, I was thinking about you after I jammed it back in. Car runs a whole lot better now, feels stronger. It may have been mucked up for a long time. Felt sorry for poor BSS, then I got all better. Go me!

I'll be coming into a little bit'o money soon and will be purchasing a new MAF. That sheit pisses me off.

Every once in a while i'll notice the tranny hunting & pecking trying to find the right gear, sometimes not shifting when it should on the highway...it's gotta be that ****ing screen, or lack thereof. I know the sensors are clean...i do that monthly.

Does anyone know what the MAF has to do with the shifting? Has it ever been explained? It's known that a dirty MAF mucks up the tranny, but how?

I had read that the MAF would falsely indicate very light throttle based on perceived airflow. Under light throttle the transmission would be told to shift softer. Soft shifts under heavy load would cause excess clutch wear. It reminds me of the mechanical linkage that when adjusted correctly would know you had WOT and would cause the transmission to shift harder. This could be adjusted to shift harder even under light throttle, but if you did it the wrong way and shifted light under WOT, you’d get excess wear.

Hopefully I read it correctly.

Thats correct...it only reads the amount moving over the sensor, not knowing the position of the throttle. Of course if we had cable TB's, that would be a problem .

Just got my new MAF WITH A SCREEN and installed it yesterday. Disco'd the battery cable for about 20min while i did the install. Already notice smoother shifting at part throttle applications, and better, firmer shifts with hard acceleration. Cost me $75 or so for the MAF.
