Default What opti will I need?

I am making a run to summit tomorrow and want to ensure I get the right opti.

Car is a 93 Formula, but the current opti is vented and has the long pigtail. Everything I read says that the opti should either be nonvented, or it's been converted and takes and 'short' pigtail, however it's neither.

Do I need a vented opti? Or a nonvented that is modified somehow to accept the long pigtail?

Here's what my pigtail looks like:

Well I am unfamiliar with '93-'94 opti's. Hopefully someone can confirm that you need a newer style opti. Otherwise, the only way I would know for sure would be to remove the opti and see what king of drive mechanism it has.

I was thinking if I take the whole part to summit they could tell me. This is my first opti change and I don't know the difference in drive mechanism's just by looking at them. Anyone have a picture of the two different types maybe?

I'm not familiar with the different wiring harnesses, but if you have a vented opti, something's been modified. The non-vented optis are driven by a splined shaft that slides into the camshaft. The vented optis are driven by a dowel pin on the camshaft. I would suggest confirming what you need prior to any purchase.

That's exactly what I meant. Pull it off and you should be able to tell by the drive mechanism what opti you need. '93-'94 is splined drive, '95-'97 is non-splined drive.

Either someone swapped the whole engine, or they swapped the cam/changed the cam dowel pin, and timing set. Interesting.

Does your car have a mass air flow sensor, or is it still a speed density setup? Know what I'm talking about?

They could have swapped in a newer motor and used the old wire harness and kept it speed density.
The giveaway would be if the timing cover had the crank sensor in it. Even then, they could just have swapped covers with the old engine.

I just figured checking for a MAF would be quick, easy, and provide a little more insight. I'm certainly no LT1 expert. Something is definitely different with the cam.

It is still speed density. It has a maf thing on the intake, but I was told it was just there for an adapter with the moroso intake (not pictured).

Here's some pics, note the red intake (painted?):

Oh, you fixed the link, good.
Yeah, the MAF is not plugged in. You have a CAI for a '94-'97 which will not fit on a '93 because of the gap due to having no MAF. '93 CAI's are longer.

There is also a fuel crossover on the rear of the intake (none on the front). What is your take? 93 engine with 95-97 timing/opti/cam parts?

All models have a fuel rail crossover on the rear of the intake - they have to.

Either that or a whole '95-'97 bottom end.

Just to clarify something I seen earlier in the thread, the cover doesn't have to have the crank sensor hole on it to be for the newer/vented styled opti. The 95 year cover is the same as the 96-97 minus the CPS hole.

Oh, also there was no themostat! What is the logic behind that? Guess I'll have to add a 160 degree thermo to my shopping list..
