Default 355 LT1 MACHINE WORK Pricing????

Does this sound right or does it seem a little high for a 355 machine job??????
Bore/hone:$160
Hot tank: $40
Cam bearings: $30
Exp plugs: $30
Crank re-surfacing $45
Balance: $200
Pressure Test each cylinder: $280
Assembly short block: $250

So we are talking $1035 just for machine work not including parts, seems a little high to me but I've never done this before. I'm looking to get something done cheep, so loyd elliot suggested Speed Pro TRW L2256 pistons and either some eagle or scat rods....Need some more input PLEASE! Places to buy them and more combination's

Oh yeah the machinist mentioned SQ decking but he said LT1's and LS1's where a good motor and that it wasn't necessary, although it would be $150 more.... Thanks guys Steve

Same here, the price sounds right. Main thing is Steve, stick to a reputable builder, don't look for the best deal. You really do get what you pay for. Machine work is just one of those things if any little bit is wrong, your in for a nightmare of wondering whats wrong with the car and a trail broken parts. Great thing about the LT1 is, it's a SBC, it doesn't really pose any special problems or challenges, any machine shop competent inn SBCs should be able to get it done for you.

yea that sounds correct to me. i was actually quoted 600 for the assembly of the shortblock (on monday) so either the shop i went to charges alot to assemble or the one you went to is a good price.

+4 on being normal. Don't forget to square deck the block and have it magnafluxed.

If it were my build, I'd get JE forged alum pistons and Eagle H-beam forged rods.

my bill was quite a bit more than that, but heads are in the equation also. plus my mishap with a crankshaft... mine was 1800.00 without assembly. i believe your in the sweetspot as far as pricing usually goes. most quote around 800-1000 without assembly, 1100-1400 with assembly. thats what ive seen

i am with you on this one, but on a budget its hard to beat the speed-pro's. i have seen some motors go through hell on them. i personally chose probe pistons to be a guinea pig, i got an AWESOME deal a set of SRS forged slugs from probe and i guess we will put them to the test

Yes diffently tight on money considering the market is crap and I own to houses and another little one on the way but I wasn't for sure like I said I've never had a motor re done. As far as square decking the machinist told me that it was not needed on an LT1 or LS1 unless your wanting to boost the compression. He said there not like the old blocks used to be. Heck he said he had 6 LT1 blocks there 3 ready for pick up and 3 on the assembly line.

I paid $1400 dollars for
block prep -$125
competition balancing -$300
polished crankshaft- $50
installing pistons on rods -$64
pin fit rod/piston - $80
short block assemble -$450
align hone mains -$150
cylinder hone w/stress plate -$176
I think it was a good price and I saved money by purchasing a block that already was bored and cam bearings installed. That's a descent price just make sure it's a reputable shop !
