Default Gains from compression

I was just wondering how much hp gains you could see, from say running like 12.2 to 1 as opposed to say 10.4 to 1?

It is all relative to your specific combo (cam choice, deck height, quench, etc). There are many other variables that come into play, and no one can really give you a specific numerical value on the gains.

On a stock engine, it is impossible to reach 12.2:1 static compression without touching the internal components.

compression is a good thing but it's gains are all relative to the setup, and is a percentage increase not a flat #

From JUST doing compression on a stock engine? Well doing the .028 head gasket bumps you up to aprox 11.06, the gain is around 5-12hp & tq. You'd be almost dedicated to premium gas, but I think you could still manage mid-grade and not see a lot of detonation. I'm sure a tune could rectify that, but a tune isn't much worth the price w/o mods to merit one, like a cam at the least. Unless you do injectors, in which case it's a must

I believe Lloyd told me once that one point of compression could mean 10hp on a pretty heavily modded car. So from stock to that 12.2 you mentioned could be anywhere up to 15hp or sodepending on your setup. I went ahead and bumped my compression way up because the work being done to the heads and block were going to be done anyway. BTW my compression is setup to be roughly 12.4:1.

What I've read is that a 1 point increase in compression equates to roughly 3% increase in overall horsepower.

Its a 355 LE2 h/c package, with full bolt ons. I know theres no real definate answer like you guys were saying. I was just wondering what other peoples gains might have been.

Ok your setup seems pretty similar to mine. What was said above about the 3%...I have heard that also. If you are having work done to the block and having the heads milled go for compression. With a nice sized cam you can bump compression and be good. My compression being so high I had some people telling me I wouldn't be able to run pump gas...however that's not true. Like I said with a big cam you can bump compression without using race gas and still gain a little hp.

Even stock cars have seen upwards of 20whp with a mail-order tune. You don't need a cam to merit one.

Fine, it might be merited now but damn near everyone here says wait till you get a cam. Unless you literally have no plans to go any further than bolt ons, might as well wait and save from having to do it again which will cost you again.

yea I've ran 12:4:1 on 93 octane...though this is the absolute max I would do, I run E85 most of the time as a precaution. With 11:2:1 I don't think there should be an issues

I'm planning on running 12.2 to 1 on 91 octane.
