Maybe check your battery harness for a short/bad ground somewhere.

Could be a bad wire too. Broken or corroded somewhere inside it, causing too much resistance which heats up the alternator to the point of failure.

That or you bought the cheapest alternator you could buy, which are generally worthless from the get-go

Well the alternator is connected to the battery lol I can't explain why it's hot though :\

EDIT: Unless there's a short and it's grounding out!! Hmm. Check out the plug on the alternator, see if any of those wires are hot, be careful!

no, the plug is not hot at all. but the alternator is still really hot. battery charger is not on, but the alternator doesn't seem any cooler. if a ground to the block is not connected, will it cause this??

Properly it should be block to frame, block to body and battery to frame and body as well. For cars w/o a frame though, well do I need to say you wouldn't connect to that? lol

If my car was here, I'd go out and look for ya.

Since it's easy: CONNECT IT!!! Could it be toasting them? Doubtful, but why not rule it out? And buying cheap **** is only going to cost you more in the long run, either because you miss a day or work or worse.

the alternators for our cars certainly aint cheap to buy but their not to much to rebuild. I just had mine done for $100, $30 in parts and $70 for labor. theres no exposed positive wires in contact w/ the body any where is there? are you throwing any codes? how much voltage do you have with the car running?

no codes, no exposed wires, charging at 13-14 amps when working good, then out of nowhere, the alternator just dies and has no charge. just running off the battery. i think i can have 1 rebuilt for around 55 here.

yeah, its shbox. what im thinking is there is a short inside the alt. why else would it be hot as hell, and everything else around it cool enough to touch, including the terminal on the back of the alt
