Is Your Opti-Spark Failing?

LT1 owners have dealt with the Opti-Spark distributor for 11 years now, but there is still much confusion regarding the causes and symptoms of a failing unit. Tapping into the PCM with a scan tool is a good way to start, but sometimes no codes will be set. Before diving into the Opti-Spark, be sure to verify that your grounds are good and the coil and wires are not the source of the problem, as they are much easier to change.

Symptoms:

* Car suddenly dies and won't restart
* Starts but immediately dies
* Extended cranking to start
* Rough idle
* Sputtering
* Backfiring
* Trouble reaching higher rpm
* Black smoke from exhaust
* Poor performance with car warmed up
* Weak plug wire spark
* Codes 16, 36, and 42 may be set
Put a hair dryer on it for a few hours to get the water out. Unplug the vacum line so it can exit. Try that first before tearing the car apart. Worked for me. Also dont run any octane gas below 89 octane.

a sure sign the opti is about to fail is that the engine is still running fine

Default 1993 Z28 Camaro Problem

I have a 1993 Z28 Camaro, It runs good when its cold, when the car warms up, it quits running and wont restart until it cools back down?? It had no hesitation, no loss of power, no symptoms that anything was going?? Anybody know what the problem could be?? Optispark maybe??

I had a similar problem with my 97Z. First thing I checked was fuel pump pressures just because in my experience they're the first things to go on a modern car. Then I moved on to the coil and the ICM. The coil tested bad, i swapped it, and now i no longer have any issues.

Is your car throwing any codes?

Default No spark

I have a 96 z28 and it ran just fine until one day it just died while driving and won't start. It has no spark and I already replace the icm and ignition coil is there anything else I should check or do I need to just replace the opti?
