High vlm oil pump ?
High vlm oil pump ? Im currently haveing my engine rebuilt and my engine builder suggest i run a high volume standard pressure oil pump. ive read alot of threads about this and about how a standard volume high pressured pump is better for our engines. would i run into any problems running a high volume pump with a stock oil pan ? or is there anything else i should be concerned of ? the engines going to start going back together hopefully next week and id just like to get as much information as possible before we buy anything new for it. thanks guys

thats what i had suggested but he was adamant about it. i already have a GM white spring for the stock pump i was planning on installing before i opted to pull the engine. he said ill be fine with the already fairly deep oil pan and windage tray.
You will not need a high volume pump for a near-stock application, nor should you use a HV pump on a stock pan.
I am running the Melling 10552 high-volume pump with a high pressure spring, but then again I'm using the Canton 242T oil pump with modified oil galley plugs.

I might be the only one but I have a meilling hv pump and I don't have any issues what so ever. When I had my engine built my builder recommened using a hv pump and at the time I was against it, but everything is good so....

IMHO, these people that recommend an HV pump on an LT1 don't know what they are talking about. Everyone thinks that if SV is good then HV must be better. For an LT1, it is not in most cases. Back in the old days, everyone that rebuilt an SBC put in an HV pump. We are not "back in the old days" any more.
Anyone that is running an HV pump should pull their intake at least once a year and check the drive for wear. Sounds crazy, but soooo many people have come up with severly worn or even stripped drive gears from the HV pump, that you don't really want to run the risk.
What happens if the gear strips? No oil pressure and your bearings are toast. Rarely (or never) happens with a SV pump. And sucking a stock pan dry with an SV pump won't happen, either.

oil pump M55a (z28) standard volume/high pressure,is what I just installed and I like it,Melling has added more metal back again on their lattest pumps,or the standard pressure selct pump is nice,hv just robs hp.
thanks for all the feedback guys. im going to tell him on monday that id perfer a standard volume and high pressure pump for the build.
is there another pick up tube i can use other then that one ? i cant wait till the 14th for it to ship

Any 3/4" pickup tube should work (assuming he's using a pump with a 3/4" pickup). As long as he hasn't polished in the bearing clearances yet, it should be no problem changing pumps for your build.
I can't find a size listed, but as long as its 3/4" its ok. Most are 5/8" though, for the SBC's, but your builder could put in whatever type of pump he or you wants so you could convert to 5/8" if you don't want to wait for the other to ship.
