Question Getting heads ported and polish???

I am looking into getting my heads ported and polished by a reputable shop here locally and they quoted me $550 and said it would take about two-three weeks. Does this seem about right and a decent price? They told me the heads had to be torn down upon delivery. The cam i will be running is the xe230/236 544/555 112 lsa

Thats too cheap for quality work. You get what you pay for.
Look into Lloyd Elliott or Advanced induction and do it right by a known reputable porter the first time.

Do they have a flow bench to measure their work? Thats very cheap work.

Contact Lloyd, he is the man to talk to. Discuss your goals and he will work your heads and custom grind you a cam as well. Or you can get an off the shelf cam and he can work the heads for the cam.

Its best having the cam be matched to the heads.

ya i figured it was pretty cheap. This guy has been doing sbs heads since the 60's and been doing LT1's since they came out. He has also been building both engines for years. About how long does it take lloyd to port and polish heads. his shop is about 5hrs away from me so bringing it to him really wouldnt be that big of a deal. Plus i already have the valvetrain so i wouldnt need the full package lloyd offers.

550 dollars is a reasonable price for just port work. There are more than two people on the planet that can port a set of heads, if he has experience with lt1s and has had good results I would give it a shot but if you are sending them off anyhow I would probabl contact LE or AI and get a quote for just port work and assembly. I am sure they will build up the heads with your parts if you ship them to them and you will not have to spend the money twice.

Contact Lloyd and tell him that what parts you already have, and he can provide you with the parts needed to complete the build.

If you want, you can even ask him to just port and polish bare heads and you will assemble them yourself.

hand porting with stock valves isn't expensive. I paid $400~ for mine and made decent power

if the local shop is reputable I say go for it imo, refered by good people with fast rides

Please don't twist my words. I never mentioned anything about LE, just stated that I've only seen good things from Ai, implying that the OP should send his heads to Ai instead of taking a chance at a local shop. That's all.

There is a guy in south Ga that does this service for $500, porting only. Has some VERY fast cars all over, many in Texas.

Killians porting Service.

Super nice guy.

Personally I would have Advanced Induction do your work. Having seen products from different companies (heads/cam), nothing can touch AI's work.

I'm not lookingto get this thread locked. Let's not turn this into a pissing match. Both are reputable shops yet LE is just closer for me. Many have used both and both have great numbers out of each company

I've had both products on my car as well and they aren't even in the same league.

This doesn't need to be another **** match...all people are trying to say is there are better head porters out there then others. Plain and Simple. Fact of the matter is, you cannot compare hand ported heads to machine work. It should almost be a no brainer what company to go with anymore...and yes, the extra few hundred bucks spent is worth it in the end.
