Default 383 Oil Pan?

Ok, so can I use my stock oil pan with a 383 stroker? I've read a few places that people say you can't.

I'm running a stock pan that's been notched some

amount of necessary clearancing will depend on the crank/rod combo used

I Ran a stocker till I got a 7Qt( HeHEHE). But mine was worked on a little as well. Also When I had the motor on the cherry picker and let it down the pan bumped the floor. I turned it over and it was scraping the oil pan. needless to say its close. A few licks with a mallet and it cleared again

At the bottom of the pan towards the nose(front) of the crank, this will hit alot of times. Big mallet and beating = clearancing. If you bolt on the pan and turn the motor over you'll feel the crank dragging at at certain point in the rotation, when you pull it off you'll see the scrape marks. Beat it out with a rubber mallet just enough to clear the counter weight.

I run a Canton as well; got a good deal on it.
Had to move the oil level sensor to clear the hooker headers, but otherwise it worked out well.
I didn't think I could use a stock pan and keep my windage tray with the 4-bolt studded mains.

In retrospect, I probably could have just used the stocker and modified it.

I'm running a splayed 4 bolt main studded kit and I had the pan on once but it didn't hit I don't think. I need to put it back together and then turn the motor over and take the pan off to see for sure.

I'm running splayed caps. I've got the Moroso 20185. When I had the stocker on and spun the motor over(with the gasket) I'd get a scrape where I mentioned. If you want to make double sure you have the clearance, put the pan on without the gasket, rotate it over, hit it with the mallet, and repeat until you have enough room. If it can clear without the gasket, it'll certainly clear with one in.

383 the 'stock" windage tray can be used. Just put 1/8" washer/spacer between extended main cap bolt nut and tray (see pic). Miloden also makes extended cap bolts or you can re-use the 3 stock ones. also need to put 1/8" spacer between oil pump and tray.

clearance, on mine the #2 rod bolt "slightly" hit front center of pan about 2"-3" from front. I just folded a towel on my work bench, put pan on towel and used a wood base ball bat to make the "indent" useing a 5lb hammer to pound the end of the bat. It took VERY little clearance.

I suggest putting the pan on the block without the pan gasket and have a friend rotate the motor while your ear is against the pan. You should hear contact and see a "witness" mark in the area that needs clearance. When you do bolt up the pan with gasket you then have a additional 1/8" clearance from the thickness of the gasket.

....YMMV
