Just pull the filter. It is unavoidable to NOT make a mess. Just be quick about it and dont let it run the tank dry..

All you need is a 20 and 16mm wrench along with a set of needle nose pliers (easier) and your set. Its not a big thing to do at all just loosen the threaded side first and let the pressure bleed off if your so worried about getting gas everywhere. Its easy as pie.

Default One Method...

On the back of the fuel rails there is a pressure relief valve - very similar to the valve on your tires, push that (have a rag to catch all the gas) - Ta-Da! Pressure relieved!

Just take the thing off.. It's not going to blow up if you dont' do a dance, flip the accessories off and on, take a dump while blowing your nose, etc.. It's not on, there isn't any ungodly pressure..

I just relieve the pressure with the valve, then pop it off! just put a rag under it.

There is a guide on my site for replacing the filter. It tells you just what to do. I don't say anything about messing with the relay, though. Not sure how you got that.

A lot of people will pull the relay with the engine running to make get as much fuel out of the line as possible.

What you said, just loosen the threaded side first slowly, let it bleed out, loosen some more. Its really not a mess if you do it this way.

Or you can undo the quick snap and be done in two seconds and get a shower of gas.

Fuel is going to come out no matter what. For the work involved getting to the relay, it seems hardly worth it, IMHO.
