Default Starter just spins...

So, if you read my other thread, you will know my starter appears to making contact with the flywheel, but it just sounds like it is spinning very fast and not touching the flywheel. Now this is on a new GM short block, so I am thinking that maybe I need to shim the starter? I have read you can't shim a starter though. Any help?

Thanks,
Bill

Another question, if I push the Bendix out to the flywheel using a screw driver, should the Bendix stay there or snap back into the starter? Mine sticks, so I am thinking that maybe the Bendix isn't popping out far enough to complete the circuit to get the starter to turn over the motor.

The Gear should pop out and retract when the Key is turned back to run.

From the sound of it I think it's not coming out of the Starter like it should. It may appear to make contact, but I think it's not.

Alot of these new Engines you don't really have to shim.

Yeah, so you think I just need a new starter or what?

Just weird how it worked fine, now this after just sitting for a few months.

Thanks,
Bill

you might have a wiring/voltage problem. a toyota i had kept eating starters every 2 weeks (after sitting for 2 years) till i got rid of it. a friend of mines z28 is on starter #12 even after rewiring it.

Just replace the Bendix, no need for a whole starter.

I was thinking that too, but I am unsure of how to get the Bendix off of our starter motors seeing as they are planetary gear and that seems to be all one piece, plus no one sells one local and I was hoping to have this thing running this weekend...
