Default Who can explain a 93 PCM vs. 94-97 to me?

I wrecked my 96 camaro monday. I'm looking for a car to transplant my good powertrain into. I came across a 93Z but have no clue as to what issues I would have should I pick it up. I wish I could keep my OBDII computer since I already have LT1edit locked to it and I have AutoTAP but, this is a really good deal... I just know nothing about the 93 PCM and what I would be in for should I get it. This 93 car is an auto with the original motor still in it but, has blown head gasket. I would be looking to put my good motor and 6 speed into it. Please help me understand the differences so I can make an informed choice here. Thanks!

93 uses a prom or 'chip'. In order to tune those you need a chip burner. The wiring is completely different. If it is a good deal, buy the car and put your 96 stuff in it along with the wiring (assuming your local emissions laws dont prevent such a thing).

What about the 94's and 95's... They are OBDI, right? What kind of issues would there be switching to that?

94 is obd1

95 is a hybrid obd 1/2 but the brain itself is obd1. the data port under the dash is obd2.

95 has a vented opti while 94 does not. other than that i'm not sure what the difference is between 94 and 95

also if you want to use an OBD1 pcm, you have to use an OBD1 knock sensor, or you can keep your 96-97 pcm and knock sensor. have swapped many an OBD2 car over to OBD1 for 100 dollars and then tuning it is free after that. you just need the cable for a 95 model car so that your data port is OBD2 with the OBD1 pcm.

i called tim at redline performance about getting my 93 tuned, and he explained to me that 93s have a chip (as stated previously) and they have no MAF, he said they use air density (i believe it was called)

speed density

MAF > SD

Just move your harness and PCM over, and make it a OBDII vehicle. Then your s/w will still work. You may have to tune a few things out, but LT1Edit will let you do that. Also, LT1Edit has no value except to that particular PCM, it is hardware locked. AutoTap does not work on OBDI vehicles, only OBDII, so you would basically be starting over.
If you wanted to switch to a 94-95 PCM, you can still move everything over except the PCM. Purchase the following:
94-95 PCM and do the resistor mod. Then you can still use the OBDII knock sensor.
95 ALDL cable with adapter for Tunercat/scanner s/w
Tunercat - It has a ton of support out there, vs. LT1Edit which has virtually none.
Scanner s/w - Freescan is free, but limited. Datamaster is not free, but more complete and easier to use.
Also pick up a copy of VEMaster (free) to help tuning.

AFA MAF > SD, that is most certainly a matter of debate.

Whatever you do, I suggest you do not want to convert to a 93 computer. It has the soldered on chip vs. s/w programmable.

Found a 97 Z28 thankfully. Already made the deal but, haven't picked up the car yet. Figured 97's and 96's were the same but, starting to realize there may be some differences there too... Odometer on 97 is digital, not so on the 96. eek! haha.. oh well... worse case, I may have a 96 PCM along with some tuning software and cables to sell. Oh, by the way, I believe its the cable that gets locked to the PCM on the first use for LT1edit, not the software. If it were the software, you could just keep reinstalling it fresh all the time and tuning friends cars. If they are still in business I might be able to get the cable redone or just get a new one cheaper than the whole setup. Anyone familiar with this?

FYI the odometer from a 97 car works the same way as the odometer in previous years. On Firebirds you can swap in a 97 cluster into a 94-96 car and it will work.

If you found a 97 JUMP on it, forget the stupid 93 headach and the 94 OBDI, if you found a 97 problem is literaly solved, plug and play.
Did you wreck this green SS in the picture , I'm sorry to hear that man, how many real ones left out there now , how did you wreck it if I may ask?

Wrecked the Green car in the photo, yes. Made a bad decision to try and pass on the highway - wet roads & low tread on tires.

Also, Thanks for the 97 odometer info... that will allow me to keep using my LT1 edit software.
