Default What could cause this.....BOOM!

Car has 40k on it. Rarely ever ran hard. Hard to see, but the piston is gone and there is a hole in the block on the left hand side. Cylinder #2. Parts of the piston were found in the throttle body and the other cylinders if you can believe that.

Car was going up a slight incline and was turning no more than 2500 rpm when it let go. I just don't get it.

Thanks!

Tony

Never sprayed and I have owned the car since 1996 with 7k miles. Car has been ran at the track about a dozen times in the past 13 years.

Do you have any enemies? Maybe someone sabotaged your ride by sticking a small screw or something of the sort in the intake.

Could have been a factory flaw in the piston, who knows? I like your choice of rods. How much, if you don't mind me asking?

I think they were around $1100.00 IIRC...........

I don't have pictures, but I was told the heads were damaged but repairable.......piston parts were everywhere including all the cylinders and in the rubber boot in front of the throttle body.

Funny, I sorta had the same thing happen to me... I had my power steering pump squeaking so I put it up on ramps to replace, messed up a pressure line and had to wait 5 days. Installed everything and went to start it and pound pound pound... my #8 piston was introducing itself to my head and valves... Car had 90k miles, had an LE1 heads/cam and ran perfectly till then. Tell you what, that sucked! So I feel your pain. I went cheaper then you and got a short block and rebuilt it.

Good luck!
Bill

Wow never heard of that at all and have no idea what caused that maybe it lost oil pressure before it let go and/or blew a head gasket and sucked in coolant and hydrolocked the engine????

Thanks man! I almost went that route, but I didn't want to have another car in pieces for awhile. Even if it didn't run, I had all the parts in one place. Glad I didn't pull it anyway as the hole in the block would have stopped me in my tracks!

At this point its anyones guess.......just bad luck to a point but at least I'll have a fast car out of all this!

Is the mod list in your sig complete??
Did you verify the timing of the MSD opti was zero?

One particular popular tuner likes to break pistons with too much timing and too little fuel. If you never verified timing of the MSD it could have been advanced and lead to massive detonation too.

The mod list is complete and I'm pretty sure I verified the timing when I put the MSD in.

I would think I'd hear the detonation to be honest. Also it appeared that only one cylinder had an issue. If it were detonation, I would think I would have seen something in all the cylinders.
