Default Double Roller Timing Set For 93 LT1

I have been searching through all the timing set posts and even though I found some good info, none answered my question straight forward. I've got a single roller timing set in my motor now (Cloyes billet) but I wanted to change over to a double roller billet set. I understand it may be overkill, but IMO, it's overkill in a department that's worth it. I was wondering if I need to get a timing cover for the newer LTX with the crank sensor to fit one or can I use the one that came on the 93? If so what's a good part number? I don't want to make it complicated, I just want it to go together smoothly, with a double roller set. I'm planning on ALOT of N2O and don't want to risk having my valves kiss my pistons over a broken timing chain.

Thanks

Upgrading to a double roller requires you to upgrade to the vented optispark setup as well, so not only will you need the timing cover but a new camshaft (for the longer pin), new optispark, vacuum hoses, electrical harness, and an electric water pump (you cannot retain the OEM water pump drive with a double-roller).

Need to change the opti as well to the 95+ style and then you would need to change the timing cover also.

Good luck getting the pin out while the cam is still in the car.

Just pull the pin out with your teeth. It's not rocket science.

Not if it has the stock cam. The hole in the nose of the cam is not big enough to accomodate the vented opti drive.

The motor's not in the car and is nowhere close to stock (except the block and timing cover). About how much deeper is the 95+ timing chain cover than the 92-94? Is it like a 1/4 in or is it something that could possibly be clearanced to fit the larger timing set? If not I guess I'm just sticking with the single roller. Honestly this isn't my first time with a Chevy V8 (Rat or Mouse), but it is my first go at an LTX, so the Gen II specific stuff is a little new for me.

Also, I just looked at the timing set I ordered, it's a Lunati 93094, not billet, and a single keyway. I think I'm going to swap that out for a billet set with 3 keyways, any ideas as far as part #s that are proven for LTX applications?

You need a cam with the drilled cam snout (like Rob mentioned). It's not just the pin that is the difference - it's the cam itself.

You need the 95+ timing cover because of the opti setup, not because of the timing chain.

Most any aftermarket cam is already going to have the large hole in the snout (so it will be compatible with all LT1 years). Take the cam to a machine shop and have them change it out. That is your safest bet.

That's what I'm wondering though, I don't want to switch opti's or the cover, I'd just like to swap the chain.

Right, I get that. But you can NOT upgrade to a double roller without switching to a vented optispark and 95+ timing cover. You also will need an electric water pump. It is not a straightforward swap whatsoever.

Alright, I actually have not even seen the 95+ timing and opti setup, I was just wondering what it would take to work. It sounds like more than I would want to do. Do you have any suggestions for a single roller set? Like as far as what you know works real well on LTX motors? My gen I 406ci had a gear drive in it so I didn't have to worry too much even with the dual stage setup on it.

^^^ Only one problem, I have the 93 style, I just want a stronger setup without converting anything like my MSD opti, or the cam I just put in.

Yeah just saw that. Not sure if the gen 1 timing set is supported by any aftermarket companies. I have never seen one.

You think a timing setup from an 85-up hyd roller SBC would work on an early LTX?
