I am thinking about installing a distributor on my LT1. can I keep the opti, and use it for a crank trigger? Any info on this will be helpful.

The best thing to do if you want to get away from the LT1 ignition is to go with a LS1 igniton just do the conversion oh an what do you have in your LT1 to run what you do.

Yep, the LTCC essentially uses the opti as a crank trigger, which is what you are talking about doing (except ltcc uses 8 coils instead of a distributor).

Honestly why would you want to deal with the hassle of converting to a distributor? Even a standard opti lasts for quote awhile as long as you keep it dry (electric WP) and make sure your dowel pin is the right length. But the LTCC pulls all the high voltage from the opti which gives you a high resolution pickup (way higher than a magnetic trigger, etc.)

Thanks ChrisB. that looks alot easier than a distributor. Now if I can figure out a second stage of nitrous.

There's a lot of good aftermarket ignition info in this thread. What are your guys' personal opinions on the LTCC/opti swap? If positive, I'm definitely all for this project in the near future for my car.

I don't like aftermarket ignitions as they significantly reduce the life of the opti. (Other than that they work great - with a blower you definitely need the extra spark).

I would say for any NA application just stick with the stock setup, you can make tons of power with it. Only time you need somehting else is with a power adder, and then the LTCC is the ideal solution. Better spark than any of the aftermarket ignitions, and has a few nice features also (2 step, etc.). Plus the opti reliability is increased greatly as there is no more high voltage - now you are mainly worried about the bearing living - and as long as you make sure your dowel pin isn't to long you are fine there.
