The factory parts are better than those found in the cheap cast kits. Your $1,800.00 budget is good for a rebuild and not much more (if you assemble the motor yourself).
You really need to study a little before you take the next step.
Good Luck,
Daren

I think your first step should be organize your tools/parts and clean your f'ing garage. Nothing good can come out of that stye. Once you are organized and cleaned up then you can pull the block down and have a look if you must but my suggestion would be to take it to a machine shop and have them explain to you what your options are.

Yeah that's a bad *** deal I would take it. But if you do decide to go stoker don't waste your money on those cast parts I just realized you were getting ready to put spray on go forged and do it right the first time

If you do find yourself having to get a rebuild there is a shop called Burtonsville Machine in Laurel, MD that has a builder who specializes in LS and LT engines. They probably have all kinds of spare parts either at the shop or have good contacts if you need to redo the rotating assy. You could probably have a new stock shortblock built by them for a pretty reasonable price. Their number is:
(301)490-3131
They are considered one of the best on the eastern seaboard.

in his other thread he said that he wants to have his shop teacher hone it and inspect the bearings. An old saying comes to mind...
Those who can't do, teach. Those who can't teach, teach shop class
That scares the hell out of me, this motor never had a chance.
