A short block is a block with crank, rods and piston in it, nothing else. A long block has heads, cam, valve train...maybe the intake, balancer and flywheel. All the bolt on stuff like alternator, water pump and so on you have to provide.

Ok, well i drained the oil and i did not see one speck of metal anywhere in there. The filter looked perfect. I got under the car and listened to it while it was running and it sounds like its coming from the trans housing. I just took it to a trans shop 5 mins ago and the guy that works there says the same thing. They started it in the air and its making alot of noise coming from the trans housing. They are gonna seperate the trans from the motor tomorrow morning and start the car to see if it is the motor or not. Will let you guys know tomorrow if its bad news or really bad news.

Whatever it is it sounds like you have at least one dead cylinder.

It's more than misfiring. The engine sounds like you have at least one cylinder that is completely dead.

ok so i had the trans seperated and i started the engine. At idle, you cant hear anything except what sounds like a healthy engine. When i give it some gas it does make a VERY slight knock sound. It sounds like its coming from the top end of the engine. Can someone tell me how to check the lifters? Im going to check the rocker arms this week to see if anything is broke. Anything else i can check for while im in there? Thanks, mike

you remove the intake, unbolt the rockers, remove pushrods, remove the dog bones, and pull the lifters out.
