163 tooth flex plate with gear reduction starter
hi guys,
this is my first post on the board so forgive me if its something really simple and stupid -- i've just had a bear of a time trying to figure out if the starter online is the one that i need for my application!
anyways, i'm working on a conversion (1996 impala ss lt1 into a 1984 jaguar xj6) and its basically done. however, i noticed that the flex plate (the 158 tooth plate) that was installed was missing teeth and looked a bit warped. i pulled the tranny and put the new plate in. however, turns out autozone sold me a 163 tooth plate, and my starter (which was brand new) won't fit. so i bought a direct drive type starter to fit up to the staggered bolt holes.
it fits on there, but it turns very slowly, is loud and i'd rather have a faster starter to be honest. plus i am having difficulties getting the car to start with the starter, pulling too much juice and generally being a PITA. so my question is, is there a gear reduction starter (the smaller type, similar to the impala ss starter i had) with the staggered bolt holes, so i can keep the 163 tooth flexplate in? I have been browsing around all day, and i found this one:
http://www.car-stuff.com/carparts/ch...104125785.html
it is for a 1999 suburban, which i was told was the "updated" type of starter. from the picture it looks like what i need, but there is nothing in the info section about it being a gear reduction type (the high torque, lightweight one that i want).
anyways, does anyone out there have a reccomendation? on that car stuff site, there is a bosch which is a gear reduction type, but it has a core. i'd rather avoid sending back the huge heavy thing altogether!
any help is most appreciated!
thanks,
tyler

You'll need to go to Jegs.com or Summitracing.com and look for the gear reduction starters with two bolt patterns. One set of bolt holes works with the 168 teeth and the other set works with 153 teeth.

I'd use this one:

I used it on my build and it's a beast.

the jegs one looks nice -- just its 40 bucks more. anyone have any suggestions? cory from the impala ss forum said that the upgraded starter for an LO5 flex plate (which is what i have apparently) is the 99 suburban, i just want to get a second opinion, or a confirmation to make sure before dropping the $....
