Default Random slow cranking... WTF

So I put a gear reduction starter in it... cause the car has 115k on it. Figured it was the starter... but I think its still there. It will randomly crank slow. It acts like the battery is dead. then i try again and its perfect like nothing ever happened.

What wires am I checking? am I checking the battery to block ground that is below the pass side motor mount? where does the starter wire go from the solenoid?

The supply or the trigger? Supply goes to the bat and the triger goes into a harness that leads back to the key. If it is ati theft it goes throught that modual on it way to the key. If you have an after market alarm as well it would go through that before the key if it is a starter disable type alarm. I would check to make sure conections are all clean at the starter and if so check to make sure the trigger wire supplies the correct voltage. Test resistance in the supply as well. You may want to test the trigger a bunch of times to make sure that it is the same each time. It may be that the ignition switch is going bad.best way to do it is with a volt meter and some type of low amp device hooked up to it like a small computer fan. This way it has some sort of load on it.

there are 2 wires going to the starter... one is for the anti theft and other is for the power...

Well I had this same exact thing happen to me once. Car would click once then start up or crank slow. Check the ground cable on the battery... Mine was loose, but not off so sometimes it would have good contact and start right up, other times not so good and poor starting. If you have good grounds, check the engine to frame ground also, and good + connections then maybe battery?

I'm on the Power or Ground cable boat. It's either a bad cable, which overheated at some point (you can tell by the cable's sleeve being shrunk away from the terminal connectors, in other words you can see wire), or you've got a loose connection at one of the 4+ connection points. On my car the battery Pos+ goes to a small junction on the Pass side fender by the power steering reservoir, then down to the starter I believe, unless that is what leads to the alternator >_> I'd still check them. Then the Neg- goes I believe right down to the starter with a small ground cable over to the fender.

Tis been many months since I've gotten my hands greasy, and last time I was under the hood of my car was to replace the battery So I'm a bit rusty you could say.

or the ground goes to its own designated ground post. Mine was located originally between the factory location of the positive junction box and the top of the strut tower. Mine now just goes straight to the battery.

You could put an additional ground to the block, it wouldnt hurt. The factory ground is on the front passenger side engine mount bracket stud. I didnt tighten mine all the way once after an engine swap and had similar problems. Mine also wasnt charging properly due to the bad ground. Took out the alternator b4 I figured it out.

yeah thats the ground im talkin about. maybe its corroded or something. Do you know a good spot to route a new ground? If i do that, and my problem goes away, then I know that that ground is bad. if its still there then the power wire to the starter is bad

FUNNY. So I hop in the car over the weekend to take it out. I turn the key on... and I watch my volt gauge go from 12... slowly down to 8. lights dimming. Im like, REAALLLLY??? WOW. so I go to start it up. It lugs, hard. stop cranking it. turn the key back on, and it turns RIGHT OVER. I say WTF. Get my dad over to crank it, and I pop the covers off the battery cells. one cell is dead. not boiling at all. WOW

GOOD FIGHT INTERSTATE. 2 years old battery dies.

Put in a backup battery my father had, NO ISSUES ever since. never trust new stuff!
