Sleeper LT1 - best set up?
#23
merim123: That's basically what I'm looking for. Not trying to kick everyone's ***, just want 2010 performance in a 1997 package, with reliability to go with it.
I've been doing a lot of research and the one thing I found out (actually I already knew this) is that the LT1 is treated like a bald-headed step child when it comes to turn-key performance upgrade packages. There are LS1 packages all over the place but the only place that seems to have a pay-and-drive package is Lingenfelter. I really like the 355 budget builds I've read up on and I'm going to try to find a good shop that can do something comparable at a good price OR copy the Lingenfelter setup.

I think 125mph in the quarter with a car that can be driven on the street is stellar sleeper territory. Plus will be a blast to drive. Your only question is what will it take to get you there.
the quietest way to get there I'd say is a turbo setup. but I'd be really interested in someone putting it down NA. I don't know what the numbers would have to be, but I'd say somewhere around 440-460 to the wheels would be knocking on the right doors. Don't know for sure though.

I like how no one has said anything about suspension, get a fully built up suspension so you can hook up and go.
The hooker aerochamber is a good quiet exhaust, maybe even throw in a bullet on the I pipe to quiet it down even more, Longtubes are going to make it loudish either way. Maybe try some shortys? they arnt -that- bad.
get a forged block for nitrous and a sleeper cam.

I've been thinking about Comp's XFI466 grind for a sleeper cam. Any thought's on this?
What other sleeper grinds are popular?
What about more common cams (cc503?) but ground with more lsa to smooth them out?
Correct me if I'm wrong OP, but aren't you looking for something with a stock sounding or nearly undetectable idle?

if you must have a motor built.. then go with a Golen engine.. very reliable and way cheaper then that Lingenfelter.
You can always just clean up your project as you go.. and if you really like the look..keep the outside stock!

I certainly don't speak for everyone when I say that Golen is crap, but their "craftsmanship" caused the motor I bought to fail. I won't go into it any further than that, but it ended up costing me money and I never got any correspondence back from them. Basically they fucked up and told me to go **** myself.

My LT1 is making good number that rival a full bolt on LS1 car. It has a stock sounding idles (CC305 cam). Gas mileage isn't great, but its hard to mke horsepower and have great mileage. You need to put money into your heads, valves, and valvetrain. Choice of headers is yours, I'm making my power with BBK shorties. You should probably do a 52mm throttle body, get the heads ported and stay with a moderate cam. It's VERY hard to build a good running car and have it remain a sleeper. Though my car idles near stock, as soon as you are into the powerband it still sounds like a highly modified car, not much you can do about that. The car might look stock stilling, but it won't be a sleeper for very long...

please ignore ramairs comment about golen motors, there has been so much talk about the company and i personally have been told my engine is a piece of **** when no one has seen heard or driven my car. it burns NO oil, leaks nothing, runs fine at 1500 RPM in OD, and will beat most of the cammed ls1 and possibly some head cam ls1 around here, all at 3700 lb race weight.
to avoid this becoming a war, especially when capricemgr comes in, i can say that the golen 396 is a nice sleeper motor with a quiet exhaust.
