Default Tranny Cooler several questions

I am looking into ordering the B&M 70264 super cooler (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70264/). Just wondering a few things before I order one up...

-Is there a "better" trans cooler out there for a comperable prcie? I've read great things about this unit, just double checking.

-I've heard the lines the kit comes with are junk, should I get some stainless steel braided lines, or is this unnecessary? Other opinions/opinions?

-I know car manufacturers place tranny coolers in front of the radiator many times as seen in this picture: (http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...m/DSC02844.jpg) Is this a good/effective placement for f-bodies? Would that placement restrict my radiator/make the motor run hotter?

thank you in advance very much!

I used that cooler on my last car. Fits tight as hell in front of the radiator but did fit. My car didn't run any noticibly higher. I used the lines that came with it for around six months with no problems and I'm not sure how other people run them but I drilled two holes through my airdam and ran them through it.

I never got a gauge on it I actually sold that car. That is supposed to be one of the best coolers you can fit in these cars.

wouldn't it be better for the trans? to run it even 10-20 degrees cooler on a constant basis?

Running an aftermarket trans cooler, even on a stock car, is a VERY wise investment. You want to pick up the biggest cooler you can fit in front of your radiator. Not only does the size of the cooler dictate overall fin surface area, but it also increases fluid capacity. Transmission coolers aren't just for drag-racing.

When I first bought my car, the first thing I did was buy a Hayden 24,000 GVW. Now I use a B&M Supercooler, and will buy an aftermarket electric fan as well.

This is the one I run: http://www.jegs.com/i/B-M/130/70266/...oductId=758370

I have it in front of the bottom left of my radiator (looking at the car from the front).

The single biggest enemy your trans has is heat. Anything you can do to reduce the heat is good. Be it via a cooler, synth fluid, whatever.

I run one in my 82 impala.. its by no means a race car but the transmission shifted alot smoother and felt alot stronger when i put mine in. definitely a huge recommendation for auto cars.

I keep hearing about GVW, how do these ratings work? Is there a certain/minimum GVW rating should you look for for an F-body?

GVW is gross vehicle weight, which is the maximum weight a vehicle can achieve (fuel, cargo, passengers, etc). When it comes to performance though, this number doesn't really matter. Get the biggest one you can to fit.

Like I mentioned earlier, I ran a 24,000 GVW Hayden for 9 years, and my car doesn't weigh anywhere near 24,000 lbs.

thanks for clearing that up, I thought thats what it stood for (gross vehicle weight), and thats why i was confused when people started talking about this rating with numbers like 15,000, 24,000, 35,000 ect...we're not driving winnebagos here

i ran the 264 for a while when I installed my 3200 converter. I used the factory cooler inline witth this cooler. My temps were good, about 140 incool weather, 160 on the hwy and 180 in hot weather, and it gets hot here in the south. I changed to the next bigger B+M, I think its the 274. It's about 1/3 bigger. It measures about 11x10x1.5. I also deleted the factory cooler and am running this one as a stand-alone. My temps are about 20-30 degrees cooler accross the board. In cool weather my trans will barely hit 120. I am getting my temp readings from the pan BTW. The second cooler is BIG to go in front of the radiator but it WILL fit. Thats what i recommend for hotter climates. For up north I think the 264 will be fine. And get a pan mounted temp gauge so you can monitor the effectiveness of the cooling.

Yes, mine fit but its very tight. I took a couple of 1/8 aluminim plates and bent them into a curved shaped, and drilled them into the bottom cooler flange. I then took some felt padding and lined the backside of the top flange to keep it from vibrating against the radiator fins. I slipped the cooler in front of the radiator and screwed the aluminum plates into the downward side of the lower radiator support. That holds the cooler up.

I already have a tranny temp gauge installed-put it in when I had the tranny built...the numbers I'm seeing on that sucker is exactly why im getting a cooler

mine runs from 190-210 range on a hot day...hoping this tranny cooler will keep it 175ish at the hottest. Do you guys think that's attainable with this cooler?
