1/2 turn. I do them with the engine running. Loosen until it starts to tick, then tighten until is stops ticking, then another 1/2 turn.

1/2 turn when you feel good drag on pushrod with fingers FTW!

Haha that doesn't help much. We did it to 3/4 and we decided to take some off so were at 5/8. Should I leave there? All the help will be appreciated!

Hahaha do you think I'm good where it's at now?
How serious is this on how the engine runs depending on how much you tighten it?

Depends on the lifters... stock I go 3/4-1 full turn. That is factory spec..

Ideally you want .060-.080 preload.

If the engine doesnt run, the lifters are probably gonna be bled down. Might be a good idea to either get the lifters sitting in a bucket of oil, or prime the engine prior to setting the lash.

Also Ive heard that once you set the lash, dont back off or make any other adjustments. The second you set them, the pressure of the pushrod against the lifter is gonna bled the oil out and the idea is to set the lash with the oil in the lifters. Anyone else please chime in on this, Im not an expert but just sharing some info Ive heard threw the years.

"spin the pushrod" will nearly always be WAY too tight. Soaking lifters in oil is pointless.

I have never bothered with running adjustment. Do a cold static adjustment is fine if you know what you are doing.

Biggest mistake is usually screwing up "zero lash", zero lash is when the pushrod no longer moves up and down between the lifter and rocker. With polylocks this is when the nut hits the trunnion of the rocker.

Different lash setting may be for DIFFERENT PURPOSES, most of us here have something different in mind than what GM intended so their spec of one turn might be fine for a bone stock car but might not be right with a cam turning 1000rpms higher with twice the pressure over the nose. Half a turn is pretty safe and decent no matter the use.

How high do you spin the engine? When I started to spin my stock engine to 6600 just to get it through the traps, I backed them off to 1/2 turn pre-load. You can typically get a couple hundred more rpm out of a motor with less pre-load. If you not are not spinning it high, 1/2 to 1 turn will be fine.
