Rear main seal.

Rear main seal. I have a 95 z28 LT1 and there is a leak from the rear of the engine. I don't think it's the intake manifold because oil comes out of the bell housing. Does anyone know if I can replace it without dropping the oil pan? Thanks for the help ive never done this before so any help would be great.
Yeah the rear main seal is one piece. Pull the trans and flywheel and it prys out with a flat blade screw driver. You should reach your hand behind the intake first to make sure its not leaking from there

Dropping the pan would not help you remove the RMS. If you needed to replace the RMS housing gasket, then you would need to drop the pan.

Wow thanks guys. I'll go check the intake right now and I'm getting the trans rebuilt with a kit from probuilt and adding a Hayden 1405 cooler. And figured it would be a good time to hit that leak.

Not to hi jack but what causes the intake leak i know i have that, when my trans was it it was all black on top and its all greasy back behind the manifold. is it the intake manifold gasket?
The intake leakes because the front and rear are just sealed with RTV and sometimes there is not enough put on or the intake doesnt get installed flat and moves the RTV around
The new intake gaskets come with a small tube of black RTV I always use copper. If you dont have poly motor mounts don't put on the poly trans mount they can work against each other and crack the bell housing. For the rear main seal I always use the teflon one.
i have used a poly trans mount now for probably 15,000 miles with stock motor mounts on a car that is an a4 with a 3200 stall and a shift kit with 4.11 rear end gears and had no issue. this is a car that shifts hard enough that on a 1500 mile trip (wa to az) i broke my stock trans mount and 3 aftermarket oem (checker/shucks/kragan replacements) after the gear swap right before the trip. I have had no issue with either noise (road noise) or vibration or damage due to the poly trans mount and 125,000 mile stock motor mounts.
I dont know why people say these things will break the tailshaft (like solid tranny mounts do) or create excessive vibration.
i did find out tho that energy suspension does not make a mount for 4th gen cars but the 3rd gen mounts bolt right up.

Also, at least on LT1s, the EGR tube comes in close proximity to the rear of the block/manifold interface, threrefore cooking the crap out of the RTV. I've owned my '96 Z-28 since October of '95, and have replaced the manifold gaskets/RTV every 3-4 years, due to this situation.
