Those with heads/cam combos with drastic MPG losses after installing gears either have a botched tune, are over cammed and do not have the correct wheel/tire combination or stab the gas everywhere they go. An engine operates most efficiently at torque peak. You want to drive economically then concentrate RPM on torque peak and as stated again, use a vacuum gauge.
I don't agree that it's anything but negligible, but it's there.

In a normal gear change you will see at most 1-2 mpg difference if any. With no other changes. This is a direct effect of the gearing. but what's it's doing is changing the amount of load as a condition of rpm changes.

Yes, load changes mpg. Yes, rpm changes mpg due to load. So in effect both are correct. This is why this argument is stupid. You are both correct to a point. Both ignoring the other half of the story to make yourself correct.

More rpm = more air coming in = more fuel coming in with everything else being equal and assuming you aren't lugging the motor. There's also more losses due to friction and the increased vacuum, and a ton of different factors. A 2 mpg loss after a gear swap is still a 10% millage loss which is significant.

17, and im enjoying it every second behind the wheel lol. ive gotten caught. cus i speed everywhere. just depends on how much. ive only gotten caught doin 12 15 an 28 over at most. but i got 2 thrown out, no show cops, DISMISSED! the 12 over is current one. so im slowing down... little by little.

Here is a test even you can do. Go 60 mph in 6th gear and take your foot off the accelerator. Note the rate of deceleration. Next, go 60 in 3rd gear and do the same. What gear was the decel rate greater in? Now think about why.

So are you saying the deceleration rate is due to higher friction in the motor?

I am asking you a question. Simple yes or no. Are you saying it is caused by friction from higher RPM?

If you think it has anything to do with higher friction in the engine you are a retard.

Well, we already know you are a retard because you think that you get the same fuel economy with shorter gears. So, go ahead and answer my question and prove to yourself how much of a retard we already know you are.

When I was 18 I used to drive my mom's Ford Escort twice the speed limit. TWICE. I'd hit top speed (95mph) every day in that car and complain why it can't go faster.

Then got my Impala. 3400SFI V6, limited to 105mph. I'd put it in cruise control at 105mph and lay back and relax. I'd do 80 where limit was 40.

I turned 20 and got tickets one after the other. Then accidents one after the other. Almost died man...have all the fun you want but just don't get yourself almost killed like I did.

Finally realized I just can't pay as much attention as I used to and I slowed down. Now I stick to 85mph in my Z28 on the freeway. Well, unless I hear 3 honks, but that's a different story.

Here is a hint. You can measure it with a gauge but it isn't vacuum.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. You might want to stop posting before you make yourself look like more of an idiot.

man its a trade off, either you can have a big throbbing v8 that gets aweful gas mileage, or you can get a tiny little civic that sounds like a pissed off bee and has a decent back seat(even though you probably wouldnt need it with a car like that) jkjk but yea i get shitty mpg too, i shed tears of joy when i get 23 on the highway, and im just bolt on at the moment
